DOOM 3 disappointing.
I had fun and all, and some of the graphics were waaaayyy cool, but the game itself was just a linear progression of going from room to room and shooting the monsters. Maybe I just expected too much.

The only real mental challenge was the "Guardian", and trying to figure out how to kill him. Everyone else including the ending was just straight ahead center the pip and blow their ass away.

After getting bored, I did some levels with only the chainsaw. That turned out to be surprisingly effective against those thingys that descended through the red electricity. When that red glow telegraphed their appearance, I just charged the spot with the chainsaw screaming and steamrollered the demon thingy before it had a chance, then quick turned and did the same to the one that was ALWAYS coming from the backside. Saved ammo too.

Chainsaw didn't work too good against the babies with wings (little shits too quick) or the flying electric jellyfish, had to drop the chainsaw and get them with something else.....but just got boring after a while.

Anyway....anyone got a good FPS. Already done the Wolfensteins, Dukes, Quakes, Dooms, and GTAVice City

I haven't tried the 1/2Life2. Is it just more of the same?
What about Ghost Recon?
New GTA?

Come on, Man. I needa new game that's FUN!

1. I'd agree on Doom 3
Haven't even finished it yet ... too dark, too much formulaic "oh no, there's another one behind me" crap.

I bought HL2 this week and have played about 3 or 4 hours of it so far. Not too challenging in general (I've only died 2 or 3 times on normal difficulty, but I am a cautious player), but the graphics are excellent and so far the game is pretty well-paced.

If you haven't played the first HL, you don't need to in order to understand the plot of HL2, which, BTW, is much, much creepier than Doom 3 was--Doom 3 was only shocking, but HL2 has a great atmosphere. There is an premium edition of HL2 that includes both games, with the first one redone using the advanced HL2 engine. You might consider that version.

With all the mods in the works for HL2, you're sure to get hundreds of hours out of it.

Also, I would highly recommend Call of Duty and the COD: United Offensive Expansion pack. Both are excellent, with varied and challenging missions and some of the best multi-player gaming experiences ever in an FPS, thanks to great gameplay modes.

3. Thanks
I'm going to try the 1/2life, but the CoD recommendation is noted.

2. I never even finished Doom 3. It just got monotonous.

6. I just finished the "Ravenholm" section of HL2 ...
:scared: Very scary! It outdoes Doom3 by a mile.

8. I still think Call of Duty
is the best FPS. HL2 is too short for the price.

9. WOW. Shoulda checked the thread....
...before spending ALL THAT MONEY on 1/2Life 2 last night!

I was unprepared for the mandatory INet connection in order to play, and the registration process with Steam.
I went with the program, but it bothers me.

5 CDs to load, that is alot of data.
So far, the graphics are good, lots of detail, runs smooth and the game is interesting. Looks like Amerika after bush* and the repubs get finished with their plan for the 1000 year bushreich.

Took a couple of screen shots with my digital camera.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

10. I'd say don't give up on Half-Life 2 just yet (But I'm jaded)
There's plenty to see, and I played through it twice because there were some things I missed.
And I have to agree with the above poster: Ravenholm is ten times scarier than Doom 3 was. Play that section at night, with the lighs off. You won't regret it.
Some of the battles near the end are nearly epic in scope.

And yes, I agree. It does look like a post-Bush** administration world.

One more thing: you can't go wrong with FarCry, either. That game was also incredible. Or Call of Duty. The teammate AI is the best I've seen in a FPS game yet; it feels like the people with you are human players, more than just cpu controlled bots.

12. What I REALLY hate was the way this game was HYPED to death
shamelessly by the computer gaming mags. Really a very pedestrian effort. Way too dark too. What the hell is the point of making a game with great graphics if you are going to cover it all in darkness.

At least mix it up, gloomy rooms with bright ones with cool stuff to see.

And Doom/Doom II were among my favorite games EVER.

14. i have enjoyed GTA:SA and Half-Life2
halfe life 2 was pretty neat, the interactivity with the environment is pretty cool and there are some portions where you really feel like you are under fire. i love the sounds and controls, i recommend half-life 2. this is coming from someone who didn't rush out to buy it as soon as it hit the shelves.

GTA:SA has been the funnest GTA for me of the lot. if you like the first GTA's i don't see how you could not like GTA:SA, the size of the world at least worth checking it out.
