Gaming Genres that you miss?
I've been going through the Battlestar Galactica DVDs....and they inspired me to reconnect my old flightstick and install some Space Combat Simulators.

Right now I've got Tachyon: The Fringe, Freespace 2, and X-Wing alliance sitting on my hard-drive. And man, are they ever fun. But I want to play newer games, with better graphics and new features. But I'm out of luck, because the genre is basically dead.

I like first person shooters...but seriously, it seems like there are about a hundred new first person shooters coming out everyday, and about 100 billion of them are WW2 shooters, or Vietnam shooters, etc. Why not a new space combat sim?

Are there any gaming genres you miss?

1. Turn based stratigies
These is still the occasional one that comes out but they used to release a ton of them. I just love when they have an epic scope to them, I still play Alpha Centuari/Alien Crossfire with a buddy of mine.

2. Have you tried Galactic Civilizations 2? Awesome, and there is all kinds of
mods for it.

I loved Alpha Cantauri too. I like turn based WAY more than real time...there is usually a lot more depth.

3. Yes, it is an awesome game
I was into RTS's for a long while, Starcraft was a favorite. Unfortunately, I just don't have the dexterity anymore to be real competitive with them (damn getting old). I do really enjoy Rise of Nations/Thrones and Patriots by Big Huge games. With a big huge map and playing slow/expensive it has all the depth of a TBS and I can keep up (on slow speed as well). It is a Brian Reynolds design (same guy that designed SMAC/SMACX), a very deep game. I love it and highly recommend it if you have not played it already.

4. Thank you for the rec. I'll make sure to look for it next time I go to the games store.

Since you seem to have awesome taste (I love the shit out of Starcraft, but who doesn't), I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I rarely play games online. The fact is, I get killed in almost every game where I play multiplayer. I just don't have the time to dedicate the number of hours of play necessary to not get my ass handed to me.

I used to think I was a pretty darned good gamer, but now people kill me before I'm even aware of what's going on.

6. Thanks!
I'm going to be getting a PC setup (for gaming) in the next few weeks and start re-buying my games (I had a fire last Aug and am still working on getting things back together). I have a buddy that I play with on these types of games, we pretty much suck too :D We play co-op against the computer and for games like SC, SMAC/X and RoN, there is always room for someone else if you would like to join us. We play for fun, so no public games since we do not want to put up with random assholes on the internet. If you want, I can PM you when I'm set up and you are welcome to join us.

20. Sounds good....except I really suck, since I haven't played either in a long time.
If you guys can put up with that, then cool beans. I'll have to try to find the time though!

8. That's my answer as well.
RTS games are fun, but TB games are so much deeper. Playing through Steel Panthers:World At War again lately (the Mega-campaigns are brutal).

29. I'm playing through Valkyria Chronicles now, on the PS3
The story is the kind of basic RPG fare - that is, a bit on the silly side - but the gameplay is awesome.

9. There's some great Rogue-likes out there.
Edited on Sat Mar-28-09 12:22 PM by Forkboy
Dwarf Fortress is hyper complex (still learning it myself after 6 months), but it's mindboggling in detail. Frozen Depths, Ancient Domains of Mystery, DoomRL (simple and very fun), Nethack, Steamband, the list goes on. I still play them fairly often. A quick hack and slash like Frozen Depths is always fun. Only fans of games like this know how attached you get to your little "@". :)

Here's a great source for Rogue like games if you want to try some again. They seem to making a comeback of sorts.

12. No problemo, glad you like it.
I had a super old PC for a long time. Overall it sucked, but it forced me to play a lot of older games, making me rediscover Rogue-likes again. I have a much better PC now but I still play them anyways. :)

13. Geez, I had never even heard of rogue before.
I looked it up, then looked up nethack. Then I downloaded nethack. Then I spent 2 hours playing nethack. And dying repeatedly.

I drank a potion and it killed me. Then I fell onto some spikes.

I am intrigued.

16. They're strangely addictive.
The fact that you can die in so many ways is hilarious. And knowing death is final adds to the excitement. It makes testing those potions a real nail biter of a decision. :)

I can't remember which one, but either Nethack or Ancient Domains of Mystery gives you the option to clean your ears so that you can hear enemies approaching better.

19. Okay, seriously..since downloading it, I haven't played anything else.
Last night I was killed because I kicked open a stuck door....then the shopkeeper inside (I didn't know it was a shop!!) got pissed and magic missiled my dog to death, then me.

14. I miss, well...good flying games
aka like Rogue Squadron for the N64. I have yet, to find a decent console flying game(besides rogue squadron)...I buy some at the game stop, like military jet/flying games, and I spend an hour or two trying to figure it out, and I'm like...bleh, just gotta lie and say the game doesn't work, and get my moola back...

:hide:

I don't mind harder flying games, but if it takes you a couple of hours/days to just learn to fly/land, its not much fun(to me)....

The last one I got was...a star wars, jetfighter game, and the control/mapping/navigation system for it totally sucked, on the second mission, I got lost in space...I couldn't find the crafts I was suppose to be protecting...

17. I like the space combat sims because they aren't TOO complicated, although some
of them use the whole freakin keyboard. I like the complex ones though. I don't really like real flight sims though.

X-wing alliance and Tie Fighter are more my cup of tea than Rogue Squadron, but I get you.

15. Old school, play-forever-on-a-quarter, arcade games from the early 80s!
In a word, the whole universe of retro gaming.

I want more variations of Pac-Man, Galaga and those hundreds of other all-but-forgotten games that I played to death as an adolescent. I want them in arcades, I want them to still cost a quarter and I want for them to have no end just like they used to.

Oh yeah. And please, somebody, hurry the fuck up and revive PINBALL!!

Yes, I know. I'm old. :P

21. I seriously miss Infocom
text-based games that definitely show my age. There's no game environment to rival the one you build inside your head.

Unless, of course you get eaten by a Grue.......

But I did read a lot of Choose Your Own Adventure books, and most of the old Fighting Fantasy books by Steven Jackson.

25. The site Home of the Underdogs had a ton of gamebooks for download in PDF form.
Right now the site is being totally revived and the gamebook downloads aren't there yet, but they had a ton of them. If they come back I'll let you know. I used to play a lot of them.

This site has some good ones for free in the meantime, either to download or read directly online. Get out your pencil and dice!

Lone Wolf was never quite the same as fighting fantasy, but cool nonetheless.

I used to try abandonware from HotU, but I thought the site closed down. It's open again?

Good grief, it's about 30 years since I played my first text-mode adventure (ADVENT, aka Colossal Cave), and was instantly hooked. I probably still have my scrawled maps, somewhere...

Plugh!

Sadly, the downloads aren't up on all the games yet (the site just came back online after years), but I'm sure the games will be available before too long.

28. Adventure games
I miss the adventure games... The good ones with story like the Gabriel Knight series, Syberia 1+2 (story-wise two halves of a single game), Longest Journey (I haven't played Dreamfall). Not the glorified puzzle games like Myst. I don't know if it's still going strong in Europe but the adventure genre died a long time ago in North America.
