only a year until Fallout 3...
...and it's about damn time.

Finally, something to inoculate against the grinding corporatist diarrhea that is network election coverage, and provide some training simulations for how to cope with the results of Yet Another Republican Election Theft, should it occur...

1. Yeah, I'm eagerly anticipating this one as well
It looks pretty engaging and I love that Bethesda is doing it, with big improvements on the AI over Oblivion.

Seems like 2008 will be a really good year for games, although plenty of games have just come out to tide me over until then with rentals and such.

2. I'm skeptic until it's released
I have a feeling that it'll either be a horrible dog of a game or a huge hit and expand the fan base. Nothing in between.

Just my 2 bits...

3. Heh, I'll be a skeptic *after* it's released
Until then, I'm just gonna pretend that it will be a worthy sequel, since I've seen nothing to indicate otherwise.

4. Skeptic before or after, once it's released is the time to make the judgement
I know Bethesda can make quality when they want to, but can they rival Black Isle? Remains to be seen.

Black Isle (RIP) and Bioware...sigh...memories...

6. Well, the screenie up top *looks* great.
But then, so does Crysis, with everything turned up all the way, and I think we both know what a boondoggle that was.

How did Yahtzee put it? You'd need a computer from four years in the future capable of orbital flight to max the game out?

I'm thinking those new graphics coding/processing advances we keep hearing about need to come out sooner rather than later. I hear there have been a number of advances in realtime raytracing, for example. I'm sure you've heard of other such things.

Will I need a quad core, quad SLI machine for Fallout 3? Inquiring minds and all...

9. No it doesn't. It looks all wrong.
Is that supposed to be South of the Mall? I can't think of where the hell this is supposed to be with the Obelisk like that.

DC Streetlights don't look like that! They never have!

And the Metro Car above ground? Why? And why are the seats in paralel with the train??? The go perpendicular! So does DC Metrobus!

Furthermore can I go to Union Station and kick around YOY's rotting radioactive corpse?

:P

We should have some fun and turn the Gaming Group forum into General Discussion: Primaries ... 'Fall Out 3 Will ROCK!' ... 'Oh, go drink some more kool-Aide, Bethbot.' ... 'Can't we all just rise above this partisanship for the good of gaming?' ... 'Rot in hell, X-Box-aton!'

What fun *that* would be!

I can't tell. Maybe Google Earth can help me.

Or not. Aren't the satellite images of the city all cracked out on purpose? :tinfoilhat:

7. I was absolutely thrilled with everything I read until this:
In fact, the Xbox 360 version of the game (and the PC version of the game, which is being planned to include Games for Windows Live Functionality) will have achievement points that will require you to play through more than once.

Argh. I hate that kind of crap. Don't make me 'open new content' by doing meaningless junk. Sell me the game.

17. 360 VS PC?
I normally like games like this on a computer better, but this might be an exception.

What is the consensus on PC vs Xbox for this one?

Also, I can't wait, Fallout and Fallout 2 (especially) were two of my all time favorite games, along with Jagged Alliance 2 (both sequels in one year? Holy fuck I'm in orbit!)

18. I finished the original Fallout about a week ago.
What a shock ending, especially the... oh, how to put this without giving it all away - low-karma version, that I saw on a well-known video website.

I've started Fallout 2, also - you say it's better?

22. Yes it is
It is exactly like Fallout only more of it. It is better finished, with more weapons, armor, characters, towns, more to explore and it is just a fantastically well done game. The sheer amount of culture references in it are overwhelming.

Don't wipe out the hubologists until you have gotten re-aligned by the one in NCR, you can get one or two point increase to your luck or intelligence. Destroying them in SF is a lot of fun though.

All over Metro Center a DC Metro stop ads for Fallout 3 are on the floor, walls, and even the pillars. I did a happy dance on my return home commute when I saw them!

Methinks Metro Center will be in the game...

27. It's a very tough game, early on.
For example: fire ants. Literal fire ants. That is, ants that spit fucking fire.

Fun, though. And graphically awesome, but we knew that already.

28. Got my copy for PS3
Rumors on the internet that the PS3 version is buggy, but I haven't had a single problem yet.

Still early. Haven't finished with Megaton yet.

It's TOTALLY got the Fallout atmosphere.

It's very Oblivion heavy, but I thought Oblivion was pretty good so I'm okay with that. The PiPboy interface is fantastic, but I don't care for the mapping and much preferred the Oblivion compass/quest marking. Maybe I'll get used to it.

The real time combat is not my favorite thing, but the VATS works great.

Love the radio function in the PIPboy. As you move into new areas you pick up different broadcast signals. Very cool.

I'm LOVING it so far. Except I can't pick locks to save my frickin life.

29. Lock picking is a pain
(PS3 version, also.)

I still haven't quite figured it out, even though I've managed to successfully pull it off once by pure fluke. I miss Oblivion's "Auto" button - the force lock option breaks the lock more often than opens it.

30. I got some tips online
I guess you're not really supposed to move both the pick and the screwdriver at the same time. For some reason I thought you were.

You set the pick in a location and then apply pressure with the driver. If the pick begins to shake, it's in the wrong spot. So you let off the screwdriver and move the pick.

Or something like that. I can't wait to get home and try it again.

I too miss the auto button. I wonder why they didn't include it.

32. I only played for about an hour or so
And still am in the intro "tutorial" section. It's pretty fascinating and so far very well done. Gorgeous graphics, interesting characters and story so far. I love how the tutorial/character creation is set up - as you probably have read - it begins with your birth and your skills and abilities are gradually introduced at different life stages - 1 year old, 10 years old (complete with birthday party) and currently I'm at 16 and just fought some bullies on my way to take an aptitude test.

I would've played more but my wife was feeling blue, so we watched "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire" instead.

31. I am just getting started, but it is amazing so far.
Make sure to listen to the "President" on the radio broadcasts because it is quite clear who influenced his character, there is some great social commentary in here. But why did they have to release this at the same time as Little Big Planet and a week before Resistance 2. I only have so much time for gaming, and I have three amazing games hitting me at the same time. It is going to be hard to decide what to play in the weeks and months ahead because this will keep me busy for a long time.

35. I've started, and am feeling that I've only just BARELY scratched the surface
This game feels a lot like the classic "Wasteland" with its openness. I'm in Megatown, still talking to people.

Too bad my slowest system part is the video card, enemies shoot at me invisibly until they come into render range, and THEN I can shoot back. Sorta sucks, but my fault for having the lowest card on the req's list. 6800GT.
