When they push back release dates...
I want to scream. "Hellgate: London" was going to be release Feb. 1st, but got pushed back. No time is set, though I've seen sites that claim to be shipping the game 5/1/06. On top of that, "Diablo III" is going to be release *some time* this year or early next. No date is truly known.

And what about Duke Nukem' Forever? "when it's done."

What game(s) have you waited a long time for? What game(s) did you wait a long time for?

2. I buy a lot of games on release day...
... but when we're talkin' the long and painful wait... the few titles that stand out just off the top of my head...

Half-Life 2
The Sims 2
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Galaxies

A game I'm eagerly awaiting right now...

Dreamfall

3. remember Katana?
by the time it came out it was obsolete. That's what happens when a hacker makes pots of money, stop programming and spends all day playing games and drinking beer. Lucky bastards.

18. one of the great video game horror stories. if not THE great.
another joke about that game refers to all the frogs. Frogs everywhere. Spawning frogs. just frogs.

7. It is frustrating
But the alternative - releasing the game unfinished is usually worse. Halo 2 apparently did not have an ending (I haven't played through, but a friend of mine tells me it just suddenly ends). Civilization 4 had huge memory problems (which were finally fixed 2 months after the release), and I think there was an extra leader and an extra civ that were cut out.

Although if they wait too long, the game becomes outdated.

11. OMG ... I totally forgot about Fallout III
Wasn't it supposed to be built on the same engine as Morrowind? I was totally looking forward to that game. Oh well, Oblivion will be here soon enough.

12. I don't know about the engine
I know it was called project Jefferson or something along those lines...Van Buren maybe...I know it was a president.

I'm not huge on the Morrowind Series, but Oblivion does look beautiful.

Fallout 3 keeps getting pushed back and little is released about if it will actually come to fruition. They made a few shitty attempt to make a platform version of the game, but it had 0 of the personality and 1/4 of the tactics. Some people call Fallout: Tactics: Fallout 3 but they have nver played the first two IMHO.

So sad...

9. Starcraft was notorious for release delays, but well worth the wait
There was a running joke/fan fiction premise on the Blizzard message boards at the time, about Operation CWAL ("Can't Wait Any Longer") which would send agents to raid Blizzard HQ to "liberate" Starcraft from its oppressive test & development cycle. Blizzard acknowledged them with the "operation cwal" cheatcode, which (IIRC) would finish any in-progress buildings.

10. I usually do a happy dance....
Pushing back a release date usually means it's not ready for release. For example, I was a little ticked when I heard Oblivion was going to be delayed, until I realized it'll only be better as a result. They're adding more, refining, fixing bugs.....

.....a couple months is no big deal.

But it's a good thing I'm not a Duke Nukem fan, otherwise I'd be waiting forever for "Forever". :)

13. Zelda: Shadow Warrior
Now they're saying October. That'll be a year late. Yeah, I know they want to retrofit it to work on the Cube and the Wii, but still....

Give us the Cube version now, and release the Wii version when the Wii is released.

15. Halo for Mac
When the Halo hype started, back in the day, Bungie was the premiere Mac game company. They took pride in releasing Mac versions first. Halo was subtly billed as a sort of 'Marathon IV' through various clues in the promo material. Marathon on the Mac was HUGE.

And then one day, Bungie sold off to Microsoft.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

M$ promised a Mac version 'someday', but then years went by, the XBox version came out, the Windows version came out and still no Mac version, even though there had been little doubt that the early development prototypes of the game were Mac only.

I eventually gave up waiting for it. I just googled for it and it turns out the Mac version (ie., Asypr port of the Windows version) is finally out. Finally. Bleh.

16. I've always found it odd...
that Microsoft doesn't release more for the Mac. I mean- they have nothing to loose by expanding into a non-x86 atmosphere. I don't think they have any deals specificaly with Intel or AMD (or any other x86 chip makers).

21. Blizzard needs to shape up...
After canceling Starcraft Ghost (after completion, no less!), they've taken a huge hit. Add to that the loss of the original Diablo and Starcraft teams (the Diablo/Diablo 2 team is now "Flagship Studios")... They're not going to be sitting so pretty once their MMO-addicted fans start playing the new crop of single-player games (Bioshock, Hellgate: London, HL2: Episode 2, Sam & Max, etc...)

23. Pushing back the release date is preferable to pushing it out
before it's thoroughly tested. How many hours and how much data has been lost because the latest greatest wasn't compatible with whatever?
