Posters are yapping about how tall buildings are phallic symbols of patriarchy and related BS in the thread about the 150-story tower in Dubai. And DUers wonder why I don't have patience with so-called "Feminist" intellectuals; I'm sick of that structuralist and postmodernist BS. :banghead:

Thats the nice name for this monument that my little sister dubbed this when we were little. What do you think this is saying about George Washington?
Yes, I am a disrespectful brat.... ;-)

4. I think you might like this book if you don't have it already

Not about architecture but a hilarious expose of the most pretentious and antiscientific bits of academia. It's NOT specific to 'feminist intellectuals' - but it's generally common on the further shores of post-modernism! I was reminded of the book here, because in it there's a quote from either Lacan or one of his followers (I haven't got the book with me) proposing that the square root of -1 is a phallic symbol.

6. Great book. When I learned of the "Sokal Affair" I laughed my ass off.
I think it was in Dawkins's book A Devil's Chaplin where I first read about it. Those PoMo crackpots are just pathetic idiots trying to sound profound with really stupid social constructivism and relativism thrown in the mix. They are the pathetic endpoint of the nonsense floating around Continental Philosophy since the death of Kant.

5. I'll get right on this, get a degree in architecture and start desiging tall buildings
that are in no way phallic, and I'll through in a couple vagina-shaped buildings (complete with vulva and clitoris, those can be arboretums or something) just to try to reduce the probability that the buildings I design look anything like penises.

7. You'd think, with how breast-obsessed US culture is said to be
We'd see the landscape dotted with bodacious domes. Not so! Domes are scandalously limited to observatories, sporting arenas, and the occasional Pauly Shore movie.

At the risk of invoking the apocryphal Freud quote, sometimes a tall building is just a tall building.

And I suspect that those who see phallic implications in every taller-than-wide structure would be among the first to complain if the equivalent floor-space of such a building were spread horizontally over the earth instead of rising above it.
