Magnolias - a second summer bloom?
I have a magnolia in my front yard (northern NJ), been there about 10 years and blooms beautifully each spring. This year I noticed that the tree seems to have had a big growth spurt and now it is blooming again with about half the tree in bloom. In the past I have noticed one or two flowers in mid-summer but nothing like this before. I haven't fertilized it, except for the grass fertilizer on the lawn surrounding it.

Is this usual in other areas of the country? My feeling is that it may have something to do with the very wet late spring we had.

1. mine is blooming heavily right now too but we didn't have a wet spring
and we are in extreme drought right now (though I am watering). Mine is the cultivar "Jane." My other magnolia, a "Leonard Messel" isn't doing a midsummer bloom.
