John Denver

New Age music is my connection to peace and the Universe. John Denver is great in an entirely different way, as is the latest from Neil Diamond.

4. My ALL time Favorite David Sylvian
If you aren't familiar with David, then let me tell you about him. He has been writing music since he was a teenager when he was in a band Japan. He left the band and went solo. His music and lyrics are an inspiration to me as he has a real talent of painting a picture with his lyrics. His voice adds to the painting and sends chills all over my body. No other musician has this effect on me. Of course some come close, but nothing like Sylvian. I have included the lyrics along with the videos.

And he's easy on the eyes :loveya:  :loveya:

Orpheus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YuvdDPYEy0

Standing firm on this stony ground
The wind blows hard
Pulls these clothes around
I harbour all the same worries as most
The temptations to leave or to give up the ghost
I wrestle with an outlook on life
That shifts between darkness and shadowy light
I struggle with words for fear that they'll hear
But Orpheus sleeps on his back still dead to the world

Sunlight falls, my wings open wide
There's a beauty here I cannot deny
And bottles that tumble and crash on the stairs
Are just so many people I knew never cared
Down below on the wreck of the ship
Are a stronghold of pleasures I couldn't regret
But the baggage is swallowed up by the tide
As Orpheus keeps to his promise and stays by my side

Tell me, I've still a lot to learn
Understand, these fires never stop
Believe me, when this joke is tired of laughing
I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing

Sleepers sleep as we row the boat
Just you the weather and I gave up hope
But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps
Were fuel for the fire and straw for our backs
Still the voices have stories to tell
Of the power struggles in heaven and hell
But we feel secure against such mighty dreams
As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring

Tell me, I've still a lot to learn
Understand, these fires never stop
Please believe, when this joke is tired of laughing
I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing

Nine Horses: David Sylvian

Atom And Cell

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCYr2T01ibk

Her skin was darker than ashes
And she had something to say
Bout being naked to the elements
At the end of yet another day
And the rain on her back that continued to fall
From the bruise of her lips
Swollen, fragile, and small

And the bills that you paid with were worth nothing at all
A lost foreign currency
Multi-coloured, barely reputable
Like the grasses that blew in the warm summer breeze
Well she offered you this to do as you pleased

And where is the poetry?
Didn't she promise us poetry?

The redwoods, the deserts, the tropical ease
The swamps and the prairie dogs, the Joshua trees
The long straight highways from dirt road to tar
Hitching your wheels to truck, bus, or car

And the lives that you hold in the palm of your hand
You toss them aside small and damn near unbreakable
You drank all the water and you pissed yourself dry
Then you fell to your knees and proceeded to cry

And who could feel sorry for a drunkard like this
In a democracy of dunces with a parasites kiss?

And where are the stars?
Didn't she promise us stars?

Nothing will ever be as it was
The price has been paid with a thousand loose shoes
Pictures are pasted on shop windows and walls
Like a poor mans Boltanski
Lost one and all.

Sell, sell
Bid your farewell
Come, come
Save yourself
Give yourself over
Pushing your consciousness
Deep into every atom and cell,
Sell,
Bid your farewell
Come, come
Save yourself
Give yourself over
Pushing your consciousness
Deep into every atom and cell,
Sell,
Bid your farewell
Come, come
Save yourself
Give yourself over
Pushing your consciousness

Nine Horses: The Banality of Evil (this video only has the audio)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq0GAkZp5AA&feature=related

I’ve got me a badge
A bright shiny badge
I’m painting the crest in yellow and blue

I’ve got me a club
An exclusive club
It doesn’t include a place for you

Hey…..hello neighbour
Hey…..hello neighbour, right you are

It’s in the way that you walk
All of the changes, all the mistakes
In the demands you constantly make

It’s in the way that you grieve
All of the loss
You don’t know when you’re better off
Or at what cost
You’ve got it good

The banality of evil

Benevolent mother
Smother the child
The benefactors are in denial

Hey…..hello neighbour
Hey…..hello neighbour, right you are

There was a time
Not so long ago
I was master of everything I surveyed
Yes, there was a time
We did it my way
We’ll do things my way

Benevolent mother
Smother the child
The perpetrators are in denial

The banality of evil

King of the castle
Room at the top
Off with their heads
Chop ‘em off

The banality of evil

Benevolent mother
Smother the child
The benefactors are in denial

The banality of evil

King of the castle
Room at the top
Off with their heads
Chop ‘em off

Hey…..hello neighbour

I don’t believe in what you believe
You skin is filthy
And your gods don’t look like god to me

But I want to touch you
Now that isn’t right
No, that can’t be right
But I want to touch you
You’re leading me on I know it

Hey…

King of the castle
More room at the top
All sorts allowed
Now the gloves are off

Hey….hello neighbour

Benevolent mother
Smother the child
The benefactors are in denial

The banality of evil

King of the castle
Room at the top
Off with their heads
Chop ‘em off

The banality of evil

Benevolent mother
Smother the child
The perpetrators are in denial

The banality of evil

King of the castle
Room at the top
Off with their heads
Chop ‘em off

The banality of evil

9. Robert Fripp & David Sylvian
Since you seem to be a BIG Robert Fripp person I was wondering if you knew about this tidbit of history. Fripp approached Sylvian to be the front man for King Crimson. Sylvian declined his offer but instead was interested in working together on a project. They put out an album Damage.

I just recently got concert footage of their performance in Japan. :loveya: it. Below are some videos of said concert, lots of close ups of Fripp and Sylvian.

I was fortunate enough to see King Crimson a few times, with Adrian Belew as front man.

And of course coming of age in the 60's and 70's, I was a huge Neil Young fan & CSN, as well as Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues among others.

20. In gratitude
Never heard of Sylvian before and I love it/him. Rick's list above is also mine, with the addition of Eno, P Glass and Laurie Anderson. I am blessed that in my life I have seen Anderson, Glass (stunning), Crimson, Yes, Eno, Fripp, et al.

I used to have 2 kittens who I named Fripp and Eno, because I loved it when they played together.

Some years ago when I saw KC they had a trio open for them, California Guitar Trio. We were like, who ARE these guys? They were fabulous. I searched for some time for albums but to no avail. Then several months ago, on a whim, I Googled and found they still exist and are going strong. You can listen to a bunch of their music here:

24. Fripp appeared on one of Sylvian's albums before Damage
Gone to Earth was the name of it. Damage was done back in '93-94.

I've been VERY fortunate to see Laurie every time she has played in Dallas. And every time (with the exception of once) I've had front row seats. I just love her. I got a chance to meet her after her concert and she signed one of the books they sold in the lobby. I even drove down to Houston to see and art exhibit she had there. She wasn't present but it didn't matter to me, it WAS awesome.

We also went to Houston to see Jean Michel Jarre perform. It was a FREE concert, and we managed to get as close to the stage as possible. It was incredible. Large banners hung from the sky scapers in which a slide show was projected on them. Fireworks from the tops of buildings. A laser harp :wow: I'll never forget it. He even played a song that was going to be played in space before the Challenger Shuttle exploded  It was a very moving song. It's called Last Rendez-Vous (Ron's Piece) - "Challenger" on the CD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtGG1WLP1pk

Rendez-Vous Houston (Part 2 of 6) - Jean Michel Jarre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrcXSh4NFsc

Oh crap I just watched this video and it brought memories and tears. I didn't know it at the time, but he's playing a semicircle keyboard that lights up.

I'll have to watch the rest and see if I'm in any of them.

19. I haven't listened to Sylvian in years
so I'll have to give your links a listen :)

Someone left a tape of his in my car once. I asked around, but none of my friends ever claimed it, so I took it as mine and listened to it until it either wore out or my car tapedeck died (actually, I think the car died and the next one didn't even have a radio!)

I do like him, but the few musicians that really get to me are

Mike Oldfield
Bill Nelson
Jonathan Goldman
Mars Lasar
Deuter
Philip Glass
Natacha Atlas

and various types of percussion-heavy belly dance music

:D

26. Yep, went to Rendezvous Houston, too!
We were on the grass along Buffalo Bayou around Taft and Allen Pkwy, so we got a great view of the skyline and fireworks. I know a lot of people were disappointed with the weather, but I found it lent a nice surreal quality to the experience and not easily forgotten :)

I was kind of surprised so many Houstonians turned out for the event, as I know most people aren't really 'into' electronic music, whether then or now...

28. It was an amazing event, and I was surprised that JMJ agreed to help celebrate Hoston's B'Day
We found out years later that some of our friends were trying to come back to D/FW and got caught in the traffic jams on the highway. Police had to close them down because of people just stopping to watch. We were standing as close as we could get to the center stage.

6. My most favorite uplifter- & purveyor of peace & social justice- Michael Franti
not bad on the eyes either;-) :D

His album "Yell Fire" simply powerful

did a movie too- He, his guitar, and a camera man go to Palestine, Israel, and Iraq to bring people
all kinds together with music. "I know I'm not alone" Had to add it to my video library.

Also, love Steve Earle, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Hunter- (J A Z Z) and Phish.

15. Saw him in concert recently (again)
and that song you heard, "I love you" just got him into the top 40 for the first time.
But how that hasn't happened before is beyond me.

Listen to "Stay Human" sometime... WOW! or "See you in the light" gives me chills.

Funny story- At that show about 2 weeks ago, we were outdoors in the park. Random seating.
We sat next to people we sat next to at a Franti show last year... assigned seating. We are all from
different towns on Cape Cod. Her neighbor is my good friend, and someone I got arrested with
protesting the Iraq war in our congressman's office.

At a Franti show about 3 years ago I was able to talk with Michael after the show, and told him that
I had listened to his music all the way to said congressman's office, because it gave me strength as I knew
that I was mostly likely going to be arrested that day. He put his hands together in prayer/ Anjali mudra,
bowed to me, then gave me a hug.

He's a yogi too!

I don't listen to New Age music, generally, because it is too repetitive for my taste, with the exception of Enya.

Pat Metheny -- A Map of the World

MAP OF THE WORLD was a movie that came out in 2000. It only showed in a few theaters. I drove to Dallas to see it, because Metheny did the soundtrack.
It had Sigourney Weaver and David Strathairn in it. Pretty good movie and soundtrack album is wonderful stuff.

We have one cd out that went around the world...we never got a penny for any of our music but a lot of people heard it. We got ripped off by the company we had signed with.
Fortunatly we did not give them all our best ones and we did get all the rights back in the end. At one point even yahoo was giving away our music.
We are working on two new albums now. One is a pagan chant album and the other is more of our stuff.

47. At this time, this song is no longer available...
I have posted a new song and a new link for those who might like to hear one...
Unfortunatly I can only post one at a time so perhaps later on I will post another.

31. Just the names
Eno
King Crimson
Arcade Fire
Beatles
Gong (anybody know Gong?)
Soft Machine
Gabriel-era Genesis
Carol Denney
David Bowie
Nick Drake
Bob Dylan
Neil Young
Roxy Music
Tom Waits

I don't listen to music as much as I used to. I'm pretty familiar with a lot of forms from the classical period to about the 1980's, but these are the ones I find myself listening to.

34. Gong?!!
I partied with them once when they came to So. CA and AZ. Gilly was a lot of fun and Daevid was aloof. I enjoyed their music, especially the space whisper.

36. I like a lot of these as well...
especially Nick Drake ("Pink Moon" is one of my favorite albums), Neil Young, and Roxy Music.

Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" has sounds that seem almost heavenly to me. My husband (who really knows music and plays guitar) says that Nick is playing the guitar in open tuning. It feels as though it touches my soul in a different way than most music.

41. I think that if Nick Drake had lived through his depression,
he could have been our greatest pagan composer. Anyway, that thought came to me once when I was thinking about his music. I discovered him only about 8 years ago, a real Internet experience. Really astonishingly beautiful music. I introduced my girlfriend at the time to Nick Drake. She was about to take a trip to the UK, and considered postponing it to concentrate on listening to Nick Drake!

43. I didn't know that he was a pagan, bigmonkey. Very interesting!
I really didn't know anything about Nick Drake until they used "Pink Moon" in a commercial (was it Volkswagen?). I heard people talking about him and that commercial, and when I mentioned it to my husband, he was flabbergasted that I hadn't heard of him. I'm 14 years younger than he is, so many people in my generation were never exposed to him before that commercial.

Discovering "Pink Moon" was like finding a hidden jewel. However, none of Nick's other work (that I heard) touched me the way the songs on the album "Pink Moon" did. That album just takes me to another place...

I understand your ex-girlfriend's reaction upon discovering this artist. I pretty much felt the same way.

44. I got to know him from the same commercial!
There are very few things I can say I first learned about that way - from an ad. I was looking at a discussion online about people's favorite commercials. That one was mentioned, I looked it up on the Volkswagen site (I half remembered it, and the feeling it evoked that reminded me of my own past), learned the name, and then read articles about his music online. The essays were so enthusiastic that I went the next day and searched up a compilation CD in the Loop.

May I recommend the version of "Northern Sky" from his "Bryter Layter"? It ranks in my top 10 songs, maybe my top 5. It's a little strange to say, but it practically makes me swoon.

My impression about his paganism is intuitive, not based on research. Just a guess. At that time, being a pagan entailed different things than it does now.

42. I think I was at that 1999 concert!
They had just been stiffed out of their travel money, the person managing the trip had absconded with it. They had to pass the hat to get home, and they were mortified to have to do so.

there are just too many.

Today, as I was devouring the interviews on conscious media network, I found Tony Redhouse, a healer and artist of Navaho decent.

His interview is also pretty good.
