1. Thanks for the link, Votesomemore!
Well, I'll give you credit, Votesomemore is a lot cleverer than tcdq  I know what you mean, though. I was too new to the innernets couldn't come up with a good one back in the late '90s.

4. Speaking of which...I've been kind of curious what tcdq stood for.
Care to share or is it a secret code?

10. Ha! Wish it were as mysterious as a secret code :)
:hi: Dover! I was so excited signing up for the first time online (AOL) back in '97. Then AOL asked for a username. What is that?!? My husband explained. Couldn't even think of one and I was very anxious to sign on. He asked does it matter? I said no. So he says how about tcd (his initials) and the initial of my first name. I've had to explain again and again to sisters and girlfriends that I was not being a subservient female, just couldn't think and didn't care at the time.

I saw your thread further down and have to read it more thoroughly. I really like your idea. It seems the Native American naming rite is similar to mine, in that a child is given a name(s) by grandparents that describe situations/events (past & present) when the child is born. For instance, my only brother's name is Duro Jiyay (phonetic), literally meaning Stay And Enjoy Life. My 3 brothers before him did not survive. Then a witchdoctor (shaman) is called who charts the stars and chooses the best night for the naming ceremony (anywhere from the next day to a month). We had the same for my niece almost 17years ago and there was not a dry eye in the backyard on that clear starry night, presenting her to the universe.

It could be big fun coming up with new names!:headbang:
(btw, I've posted a message already but it hasn't shown up. Doing it again. Hopefully it won't wind up as an OP :scared:)

2. I'm thinking of it
Following the insanity of the 2004 election, I came up with the name I have now.
Things have changed and I want a name to reflect the changes. In the spirit of Obama's phrase, "Yes, we can," I was thinking of changing to "Can Can Girl."
Are you searching for inspiration for a name change? Tell us how you feel about things currently and maybe we can help you come up with a new name.

3. I like your name..
and it really makes sense in light of history.

Yes. I'm looking for inspiration. Not sure I want to go with my feelings at the moment.
"Depressed Democrat" might come back to haunt me. I was going to look through the profile names and see what else is taken.

6. It might be kinda fun to have a "What's My Name?" thread
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 12:49 AM by Dover
In the Native American tradition, a naming ceremony. We could each be given a name by our
fellow ASAH partcipants. The naming of Obama as our next president is a milestone for
all of us as well. It's been a long and winding road, and we've all been through so much
together and separately, experiencing important changes in our lives. Perhaps we need to do this naming ceremony or some other ritual to mark this important transition and the path we've been down.
Move into this change with a new name and sense of self.
It's not important that we actually change our DU identity so much as honor one another's
journey with a name. So for instance under Votesomemore's name each person could enter the name they would give her (with or without an explanation). It also wouldn't be important to grant
everyone a name, just those you feel a resonance with and/or if a name comes to mind.
And of course it doesn't have to be too serious. Humor would also be welcome.

Does that sound like fun?

Native Americans Speak Out on Sacred Healing and Transformational Rituals

The Naming Ceremony

Legal names are given, but Native American names are earned. Gabriel Horn gives a personal account of why and how his Indian name was chosen: "By the time I graduated from college, I had already done my battles for the people. I had protested against stereotypes of Native Americans, I had fought for a Native American literature course on campus, and I had asked for participation in the United Nations. My immediate family believed that I had earned a name. The name came to my uncle, a traditional Cherokee man, who had a vision of a white deer coming to him and singing my name. He knew it was to be White Deer.

"My godmother, my uncle, and some close friends attended the ceremony. A pipe was filled with tobacco, and offered to each direction, as they called out my name. They called it out to the east, the south, the west, and the north. They called it out to the sky and to the earth. They called it out to the plants. They called it out to the animals. In other words, I was introduced to the universe as White Deer. That was my rebirth. In a sense, I was a born again Indian at that point." Receiving a new name was a healing experience. I was now completely comfortable with my Indian identity, whereas before I felt fragmented, not totally in touch with who I was."

Name changes can be physically as well as psychologically healing. Some time later, White Deer became ill, and a longer name was the solution: "I had gotten very sick, and was near death. A very old Ojibwa medicine man from Canada came down to Minnesota. I believe he was over 100 years old, and he didn’t speak any English. During the ceremony of healing for me, a manifestation appeared in the room. At that point, the medicine man said that the entity wanted me to also be called Autumn. I was now White Deer of Autumn. The ceremony ended, and my sickness was healed.

"The name, of course, bestows certain powers and responsibilities. The power of the deer is its awareness, its keenness, and its protective nature. The white is purity, purity of heart, mind, and words. Autumn, I was told, is a time when change is most visible. It’s a time when change is at its most powerful. And so, I was named for that season."

Indian names can be passed down, as western names often are. The distinction is that you are not stuck with one name all your life. This represents different beliefs about human potential, says White Deer of Autumn: "Crazy Horse passed on his name to his son, who took the name Worm as he got older. So, we can pass on names, too. The idea is that you’re not stuck with the name you were given at birth. In western society, it’s almost as if you can’t change; you can’t evolve; you can’t grow. From a native perspective, your name reflects who you are. White Deer of Autumn reflects what I’ve done. But as I go on in life, I may want to let go of that and take another name. I have that right. So, naming is the ability to evolve and change in your identity. I think this is healing, both physically and emotionally."

7. OOOH! Great idea!
And even if you don't change our name on here, you could maybe use it on other boards around the interwebs.

Love this. Let's do it! :)

24. Hi Votes. Yes I would be happy to compose and post that thread
but it will have to be late tonight or tomorrow as I've got too much going on right now.

If someone else would like to undertake that task in order to get it started sooner, I'm
more than happy for that to happen, and will join in as I can. All I ask or suggest is that we title the thread: What's My Name? - The ASAH Tribe Naming Ceremony.

9. I'm seriously considering it
When I signed up for DU, I, like a lot of you, couldn't come up with anything clever so I justed used my cat's name.

In my innocent ignorance I had no idea that spankie is a term for masturbation. Imagine my embarrassment when someone else pointed it out! I missed the amnesty last time (was taking a break from the internet), but I'll likely change it this time.

11. I'm keeping mine
I chose it when I sincerely believed that Kerry was going to win--I sang the song every day in the month leading up to the '04 election, a daily weaving of magic. Of course I was heartbroken (and furious) that Weenieboy cheated a second time, but now I'm grateful that I can finally sing the last verse:

Morning glow, by your light
We can make a new day bright
And the phantoms of the night
Will fade into the past
Morning glow is here
At last

:hi:

16. Perhaps a GREAT way to start shifting!
I could seriously use some kind of ritual to break free and remind myself what I am trying to make real, NOW

My "name" has been around for a decade or more, since I started in journalism. And since it would sem that may not be my "new" direction, perhaps it would be good to reflect on who I really want to be - NOW

a-HO! let the Naming begin!!!!

18. How about ChangingWoman?
Just a thought. :hi:

http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/Changing_Woman-Navajo.html

A Navajo Legend

Changing Woman comes closest to being the personification of the Earth and of the natural order of the Universe as to any other brief way of describing her. She represents the cyclical path of the Seasons, Birth (Spring), Maturing (Summer), Growing old (Fall) and Dying (Winter), only to be reborn again in the Spring.

19. wow...
considering I "am" a Baby New Year, and I am constantly re-inventing myself...this is very cool!

I was also playing with the idea that I am always the Cheerleader for the Universe...always encoraging others to seek the higher purpose and see the big picture. In the newsroom, the youngins nicknamed me "berkeley" beacuse I was always wnting to be the little Activist about humanity issues.!

hmmm, I gueSs this may take some meditating ;)

thanks, LE

17. I took a new name at my Croning in October
and although I like my DU name and intend to keep it, I would like to share my pagan/crone name with ASAH. It is Lillis.

The reason I picked it, besides liking the sound, is that Lillis may be a variant of Elizabeth, possibly from Scotland. One of my Estonian great-grandmothers was named Eliisabet. Also the word lilles in Estonian means "inside the flower", lill being the word for flower. I have been fascinated by all kinds of flowers, particularly wildflowers, since childhood.

Name changing blessings to everyone here,

Lillis / LiberalEsto

22. I'm going to
just for fun. been using my real name, which is unusual enough to make the connection. I'm always paranoid I'll get in an argument with someone I know - and I won't realize it but they will ;-)

Haven't thought of a new one yet. We should play 'guess who' based on posts in this forum ;-)
