1. my stepmother swears if you eat a tablespoon of honey from local
bees you'll have no trouble with allergies to pollen in your area after a couple months (but you have to eat the honey every day to keep up immunity)

not sure what causes hives so this may not be the answer you are looking for

2. You might try natrum mur
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 10:31 PM by Nancy Waterman
a homeopathic remedy. The corresponding mental characteristic is usually someone who tends to hold in powerful emotions, perhaps a history of some sorrow that is carefully held back and just dealt with. sometimes there is a craving for salty foods or chocolate. The hives then get worse under stress.

If they are really hot and painful/itchy, apis might also work as a remedy. Mentally you would be much more agitated than with natrum mur. But mat mur is likely better for a chronic cse.

3. what is it that's bothering you?
I can only get rid of hives by identifying and removing myself from the irritant (or the irritant from me).

I get hives from a combination of pollen plus 7-11's coffee. Beleive it or not, it was made worse when my doc prescribed allergy medication!

The tip about eating local honey is a good one that I'll be trying, myself. Thanks!

4. just remembered - bentonite clay will help the sores
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 02:12 PM by crikkett
I remembered last night that I was able to ease itching/swelling/pain of hives bumps with a mixture of powdered bentonite clay mixed with just enough apple cider or water for form a paste. I've been able to buy powdered bentonite in jars and in bulk from a health food store.

Apply the paste to your bumps and let it dry before washing it off.

This is a mixture I also use for facials, it draws junk out of your pores & tightens your skin. I suppose it also draws the histamine out of the hives bumps (and histamine causes the itch & swelling). It certainly feels a little better while the clay is drying.

By the way, if you're interested, bentonite is also sold in solution form to be taken internally. Draws nasty junk out of your gut.

Good luck!

5. Alka Seltzer - sounds nuts, I know ... but it works for me & mine!
I have no clue why, but was given the 'tip' by an older lady friend many years ago. I was skeptical, but have learned many times over to not discount the bits of wisdom from my elders that used to be called ~old wives remedies/tales~!

It doesn't make the hives go away immediately, but does give a really fast relief from the insane itching. I've tried the doc's stuff - didn't work as fast or as well, nevermind the added side effects of most of his drugs (I just wanted the itching & welts to go away - not be put to sleep!). I've used the seltzer w/hives caused by allergies & the photo-reaction (w/hives) to sun exposure after using antibiotics. My daughter uses it when she has stress-related outbreaks w/much the same results.

Others' mileage may vary! Good luck, I know how miserable hives can make you feel.
