Anyone used the "Holt" dog harness?
We will be adopting a sweet 40lb mutt in a few days. He's a wonderful little creature, but he REALLY pulls on the leash and is quite strong for his size.

I've been researching harnesses and the "Holt Control Harness" has been pretty well-reviewed as effective, but not irritating to the dog.

I just wondered if any DUers had first-hand experience with this, or any other, harness designed to discourage pulling?

1. Never used the Holt but I love
the Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness to stop pulling. Works great on my hundred pound solid muscled GSD. About the only thing that does work with out killing me if he tries to chase something. Though he hasn't really tried for a few years now.

Since the leash clips on in the front if/when the dog pulls it turns toward you.

3. May I inquire as to where you got yours?
Was it expensive? I need something like this for my Lg. Bichon as he pulls and a neck collar is taboo for him. He's got a collapsed trachea. I tried the gentle leader that goes over his nose, but he outgrew it before he and I really got the hang of it!! He can slip right out of the next size up!

4. It has been a couple years
since I got Zaiden his and the original is still looking and working good. I don't remember where beyond that I got it online. I think I just searched for the cheapest price including shipping. I used Premier's (the maker) site to size it. Since your Bichon has trouble maybe look into return policy just in case though it should not go any where near his throat. I think Zaid's ran around $25. but he has the second largest size.

6. Using CC's link (above) I found out they even have an eco-friendly version!
https://www.premier.com/store/Products.aspx?cid=9&pid=79

$31, including matching leash.

If you only need the harness, I found it here http://www.sitstay.com/dog/supplies/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&categoryId=13977&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=13272&top_category= for $18.90 and there's a 10% off coupon ("DOGLOVER".) They don't carry the sco-friendly version, alas.

9. Based on your rec and further research, I have decided to go with the Easy Walk!
It sounds like just what we need and the eco-friendly version fits into my attempt green our routine in all areas. (I buy carbon offsets now to cover the ungreen shipping factor.)

Mind if I bug you with one more question? Would you say the harness fits "true to size"? My guy is 25" around which puts him at the very top of the Small/Medium, in the upper-middle of the Medium and at the bottom of the size Med/Large. I was going to go with the Medium. Did you find the sizing info accurate when you bought yours?

Thanks again for suggesting this great product! :hi:

10. I would go with medium since
-that one gives you more leeway, including weight gain/loss of the dog. (Mine has a seasonal weight difference.) It is pretty much true to size. I almost got the extra large and it would of been too big even though Zaid was in the low end of it and the high end of the large. I would check on return policy just in case though. Maybe some of the others will add in their sizing experience too, specially if they have a dog about the same size as yours.

11.  Thanks so much, CC! I feel better getting a regular user's input as well as the company's.
LOL at "seasonal weight difference"--- That's JUST how I'm going to describe my own cold weather=EATEATEAT results from now on!

Again, thanks for your help in making sure my new baby has the right accessory. :yourock: :pals:

you both get to enjoy lots of walks together with it.

I wish mine were seasonal. I'm not sure Zaid gains actual weight as much as he gains a second and maybe third dog in fur. I could swear we brush at least two dogs worth of fur off him in the spring.

Adding a pic because this thread needs doggy pics.

14. What a handsome man! And I'm happy to report the the Easy Walk
has worked like magic! He's even doing better walking on a plain leash w/out the harness.

Thanks again for turning me onto this great invention. :hi:

15. Thanks, I am biased. I am so glad it is working out
for you too. I know it works great with the Zaid but always worry when recommending. Every pup is different so you never know. Best part is you both get to enjoy walks now.

16. Forgot to include a pic of my own Easy Walk spokesmodel:

Seen here being horribly spoiled and hoarding his toys.

17. What a cutie.
Don't all dogs hoard their toys? Mine keep their hoards in the crates and there is trouble for any other dog trying to get in the wrong crate. Even the cats like to sleep in the crates. lol

5. We use the Gentle Leader
Easy Walk Harness, too, for our yellow lab. It works very well. We got it at PetSmart.

12. Walking a 75 lb Golden Retriever is not fun
Gosh, she's a sweetheart but has never mastered proper leash walking. She will be 3 next month. I've had some success with the EZ Walk Harness but the Gentle Leader really worked wonders. I can walk her with 1 finger when she's wearing that. She hates it and tries to remove it with her paw, but she likes her walks more, so she tolerates it.

18. Cast another vote for the Gentle Leader
I know you've already made up your mind (and I hope you're having success) but I can't say enough about the gentle leader - Bella is an absolute ANGEL on it. Given that my husband has a torn rotator cuff and I am still dealing with torn hip muscles (10 mos now) that she inflicted on us prior to the harness, I can't tell you how happy I am with this piece of hardware.
