1. For starters, I would lose the Norton AV.
Go with AVG free edition - download at bottom of this page. AVG picks up things that Norton and McAfee miss.

After you uninstall Norton, install AVG - don't forget to update the signature files. Run a full scan on everything.

After that's done, if you're running Win2k or XP, download a freebie copy of ewido anti-malware here. Do not forget to update the latest scanner files.

If you don't have SpyBot S&D installed, get it here. During the installation process, make sure you install TeaTimer & go thru the inoculation process. (TeaTimer notifies you when something tries to make registry changes. You have the option to OK or deny the change.)

Finally, if you don't have a firewall or use the Windoze firewall, consider installing the freebie ZoneAlarm firewall. Get it here.

PM me if you have questions. Good luck.

2. thanks, will try these things
I couldn't seem to download spybot sd when I went from the microsoft site's links. It seemed to be loading but I can't find it anywhere??? I also can't seem to get the windows security patch updates because I can't "verify authenticity" WTF? should just I try reloading windows? How do I uninstall this one first? (or do I need to?) What should my first step be? (besides stopping the check to that idiot and going and buying a whole new computer?)

I ran norton scan twice - in regular and safe mode and it does NOT report any infections yet in the activity log it says it found half a dozen infections (and gave me pop up warnings) that it culd not access. will this other program (AVG) remove them? (providing I can down load it?)

May I send you the activity log by PM? (posting this here in case it might help somebody else)

3. When you download programs, files are put in the default location
your browser specifies - you can change it via the browser options. I set up a directory called c:\junk\downloads & pointed my browser to that dir.

You will need to fix that authencity error & get the latest windoze patches. I can't help ya with that one. There's some really sharp folks here at DU that might help you fix that problem.

What browser are you using? If it's IE, I'd recommend you change to Firefox. You can get it here.

I did a writeup last year about setting up a new or freshly wiped PC for my challenged family. It's about four pages long, and can be opened in Wordpad. I can email it to you if you PM your email.
