Broken lap top
The top/screen hinge broke. The lap top and the monitor still work, it's just that the monitor is very very very dark. Are these problems related? yeah, probably. Is there any way to fix it? Do you fix laptops?

I have company from out of town, so I might not get right back here if somebody posts.

Thanks in advance!

1. There is generally a ribbon or other connector
somewhere near the hinge assembly. All laptops are different, though, so getting access to that connector (which might just be loose) can range from easy to a pain in the neck.

But, it could also be that the screen backlight is burned out or damaged, in which case you'd need to buy a new LCD panel. I take it this is not under any sort of warranty (or the damage resulted from a drop or other accident)?

2. Thanks
No, nothing happened to it except the hinge broke. We will try to find the connector. I did look online too, and it looks like you can send them in to be fixed fairly cheaply. So maybe things aren't so bleak. I'm pretty sure my warranty is up.

3. Recommend highly
Belmost Computers at 26th & Belmont.

They built my '98 tower last year. It's
great, and it only cost me $150.

(You're in Portland, right?)

4. No, Florence
But I will definitely look for their phone number if I have to ship it for repair. And if somebody is selling towers for $150, we'll look that up too. We do computer sales & repair, this laptop thing was just a little out of the ordinary. Thanks!

5. Here's their web site.
http://www.belmontcomputers.com/

He put in a CD burner and installed open source
antivirus, Nero, et cetera, et cetera.
