Does anyone know how to convert
.flac to mp3?

My computer won't play flac files, so I'm not sure what to do. Is this a new file format or something?

thank you

1. winff
It's primarily a video converter but it will handle audio as well and supports pretty much all formats. Just tested it and verified it handles flac to mp3.

2. Flac is a lossless audio format
So the sound will be better quality than mp3 but the files will be bigger.

You didn't say whether you are Windows, Mac or Linux. Rather than go to the trouble of converting files, VLC player works on all three operating system and will play flac files. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It's also a great 'swiss army knife' program for playing most types of media.

6. As I recall, .flac is the format used for encoding entire discs into one file.
Is there an application out there that can autodetect and chop up individual audio tracks from a .flac?

7. not necessarily...
As canetoad noted, flac is just another codec, like mp3, but lossless. As far as ripping an entire disc, while I have seen mp3s done that way (into one solitary file) as well as flacs, it seems to be more typical to rip a CD track by track.

To edit an existing sound file, try Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net (Another open source program.)
