Question about 3G connectivity issues.
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 03:26 AM by PJPhreak
Hi ya'll
I am using a Kyocera kr1 router using a Novatell Merlin S-720 aircard/modem with Cyberioncs as my ISP who uses Sprint as the signal carrier.my router is hard wired to both of my computers thru a Cat 5 cable (as my ISP says that the signal from the Kyocera canceles out the incoming signal from the Aircard) I live quite a distance from my closest celltower (Phone reception sux here no matter who your carrier is) and I also live in a valley that is about 200 ft lower than the surrounding hills and ridges (Flint Hills area of Eastern Ks.) There is no Cable,DSL or Dialup available here,3G is it,Period.

My problem is a case of horrible signal fade and connection drops, there are times that we have to reboot the Router/Modem up to 75+ times a day (This is not an exaggeration!) it drives us nuts! there are times that we get 300-400 Kbps download speeds and other times that the best we can do is 5-7 Kbps!!

I understand that Air Inversions can interfere with signal reception (Especially in the winter) but this is a year round thing it will run like a scalded dog sometimes and other times I want to smash this thing all to pieces!

My computers are a AMD dual core/4 gigs Ram homebuilt and a Sony Viao VGN FS-660,Intel 1.73/1 Gig ram. Both running Linux Mint

What can I do to get a more stable Internet Connection,we bought a Wilson 3G antenna, put the Aircard in my Laptop and wandered all around the house and property to try and locate the best atenna placement, have run the Router Wired,Wireless and a combination of both.

This is making us nuts, and Cyberioncs treats us like we are stupid (My GF has been running Linux since 97 so we have a Linux experienced person here),and is of no real help.

So If you lived WAY out in the Boonies, had to have the Intertubes (No TV or radio available) and all you could use was 3G what would you do,what equipment would you use (Antennas,Signal Amps, cables ect) and why?

Sorry about the long post,I'm just tryin to give all the details.

Thanks,P.J.
