I'm going crazy with this shit. Help!
I've got an old 333 Megahertz computer with a lot of word processing documents on it that I want to transfer to a new computer. I have a Jump Drive, that is USB.

All I want is a cable or adapter that will allow me to transfer the data from my old computer, which has no USB ports, to the Jump Drive. It would seem to me that there should be a cable or adapter that I can plug one end into a serial port in my old computer, and the other end into the Jump Drive, and transfer the data. However, I find no such cable.

How come nobody makes such a thing? Or have I just not found it?

Thanks,

Floog

but couldn't you use a PS 2 adapter that fits on the end of the USB cable to connect it to the old computer?

2. You can ue a Direct Cable Connection.
You will need to buy the cable, about $20 at most Computer stores. The cable will be labeled "Direct Connection Cable, and will be located in the same area as Printer Cables.
The computers are connected via the parallel port (printer ports).
You will need Win95 or later.

The Direct Cable Connection is a little known Windows feature that is not installed under typical installations, but is on the install disk under Network Options (DCC). It is a fairly simple procedure. Its the old LapLink.

Lots of Internet help.

3. If you have no USB ports you can't connect to a USB jump drive.
You could, of course, remedy that by getting a USB adapter and cable
for the old computer, but that seems a bit of a waste of money; on
the other hand it would be a direct solution.

Mr. Floogeldy's suggestion is probably what I would do in your situation.

Among the other possibilities:

1.) Take the old hard drive and connect it up to the new computer
on an extra IDE connection long enough to copy the files.

2.) Connect the two computers with ethernet and copy the files
that way (requires cable(s) and hub).

3.) Make a backup set of the documents on floppies (docs are
not usually that big) and move them that way.

All of these should be cheap but will require a certain amount
of work.

4. The solution is easy and will not cost you a thing.
Take the hard drive out of the old machine and put it as a slave drive in the new machine.

You need to check the jumper settings, make sure the new one is set to master and you will have to set the old one to slave as it will probably not do Cable Select.

Easy as pie. Just be sure to unplug everything and take your time if you haven't done anything like this before.

When you are done, just reconfigure and reconnect the drive to the old machine.
