Better to un-install printer and reinstall from List of programs
or from Control panel?

I cannot seen to get my HP 1210PSC to scan any longer and have tried all I can do as suggested by certain help sites. Seems to be a big problem for many with this model but it just started with mine. I know that after the un-install, I have to follow the original installation directions.
If the thing has given up the ghost, I have another printer stored. I will then have to un-install the 1210 again. Don't want to mess this up.

Thanks

1. Before you go uninstalling anything
make sure that the scanner really is not working. My bet is you are using whatever scanning software or utility came on the device CD.

Open good old Paint (Programs/Accessories/....), click File menu and From Scanner or Camera. If you have IrfanView or Photoshop installed, dig around in the file menu for a scan command. In IrfanView it is Acquire, in Photoshop it's in the Import command.

In any of these programs, if a scanning dialogue comes up and works, then your problem is moot. It's the HP software that's at fault.

Having seen the utterly useless scanning utilities that come packaged with most hardware, my preference is to scan directly into an image editing program. The standard procedure to install a printer is to unplug the device from the computer, install the drivers and then plug in and turn on the printer. XP should then give you a 'New Hardware Found' message then in a few seconds 'Your new hardware is installed and ready for use...'.

It may be worthwhile uninstalling the current HP software using Revo or Add/Remove programs, deleting the printer from Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, rebooting and starting from scratch.

3. Interesting trouble. I checked everything I could, I then un-installed
and reinstalled the PSC because I could find no other way to approach my problem. At the end of the whole process, I clicked on the My Director icon on the desktop just to see if I could access the functions.
Nope: Got a quick pop-up message that told me that a certain file could not be found. The file name disappeared before I could write it down. It gave me an option of searching for it via browse.

I have about given up on this thing. Next was a request to send error message to MS(no). Does that tell me I have a file missing from my computer that will cause this problem? I wonder if that file is still necessary in I remove this printer and install the new HPF4180 PSC.

I am really confused and am wondering how an important file could have disappeared. Did I mess with the registry when I last used Ccleaner?

4. What is this 'Director' of which you speak
:)

Is it some HP thing that comes on the installation CD?

I really doubt that CCleaner has anything to do with this. If you have done a full reinstall from the CD, I'd tend to think that the missing file is a Windows file that has gone astray. Can you have another go at showing the text of the error message?

Another option is to uninstall it again, then download the latest drivers from the net and try them. You can find them here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/hp-psc.html (Please don't be tempted to click on the 'Click here to run a free Scan...' at the top of the page) It's a 166 mb download.

5. Director is part of the Hp psc series scanning printing & copying
Since I don't scan often, I can't remember much except that section has the icons for scan picture, scan doc, make copies view and print. It is also where the toolbox is for various settings.
It is a desktop shortcut. There is another desktop icon that shows what you have scanned or saved to my pictures.

I spent the day un-installing and installing this foolish disk.

The last message during installation:

Internet Explorer script error on this page
Line 146 Char 5 Unspecified error
URLfile:///C:Program%Files/HP/Digital%20imaging./bbfe/director/director2.htm
Do yo want to keep running scripts on this page.

A second one pops up Same basic info except:
Line 99
Char5
Unspecified error
Code0
URL file:///:/Program%20files/HP/Digital%20imagingbbfe/director/director2htn.
Do you want to keep running scripts on this page.

This was on the "Install. Have not done another un-install as per your comment for the other message.

I am about ready to can this printer and hook up the new one. I'm concerned it is a problem w/MS and not the machine. If that is the case, I'm in duck soup. I'm too tired to do more today. Fill you in tomorrow. The message I referred to before on the un-install was not the same.

6. To add to my above posting, here is another message
Windows in searching for:

Hpqdirec.exe.
To locate the file yourself, check browse.
I could not find it.

BTW, the only way I could un install the PSC was through Revo. The option in All Programs and in Control Panel would not work.

7. Your disc predates IE7 or IE8 so HP have issued an update.
