SOS! My computer is ridiculously slow...

...and any page with a password prompt will automatically freeze up.

So far I've done the following to no avail:

1. Ran an Avast antivirus scan
2. Deleted temporary files
3. Deleted unnecessary files
4. Emptied the recylcing bin
5. Ran a successful de-frag

And yet I'm still saddled with this problem, and my IT Blessed Great One has yet to call back.

1. Download these two programs, both free
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 11:42 AM by Jersey Devil
You can get them from download.com or Google them to get them directly:

Malwarebytes

CCleaner (Crap Cleaner)

If you need the IT's permission to install them you'll have to wait for him.

You didn't say what kind of system you have, processor, memory, OS, what software you may have running at startup, etc., so other than cleaning up it is impossible to make any other suggestions.

2. Cleaning out the startup programs might help, too
because if the box is starting a lot of stuff you really don't use all the time, having them squat in the background and eating resources will slow you down.

3. Disconnect from internet and run MalwareBytes and reboot. Then check your memory capacity
(After reconnect to net) Go to link and enter machine make and model it will tell you the number of slots and maximum for your machine. Right click MyComputer and select proprieties and it will show current memory (less video memory in use).
