Message board recommendation needed for web site

Hiya. I'm working for a small non-profit startup concern and a lot of our future traffic will hinge upon having a stable, attractive, intuitive and very full-featured message board. We had a webmaster that had set up phpBB before he went off to do other things. I was very pleased with it until I changed the skin on it and it stopped working and a temporarily hired techy didn't fix the problem, but replaced it with some pathetic thing called PunBB. We really need a free and easily maintained option for now. I'd ultimately like to incorparate some DU things (like the purchase of stars) into it and I'd be grateful for any recommendations.

and would have gone that route but ended up upgrading my hosting plan which included a phpBB.
