Halp!1 Is anybody else having trouble connecting to DU today & partially yesterday?
Edited on Thu Feb-04-10 12:50 PM by UTUSN
Yesterday there was ONE specific thread in GD I couldn't click on. An Internet Explorer error page resulted.

Today I'm having tons of trouble with ALL of DU, the main link to DU, and especially the Lobby. I have to go through Google Search instead of Favorites. And I get parts of DU but not the Lobby, and get the error page when changing forums or Refreshing.

I've tried a few of the other stuff in my Favorites and nothing else seems affected so far.

Thanks for any suggestions.

O.K., the only recent difference was that 2 weeks ago I installed an updated/renewal to CA anti-virus. At first my cookies had to be reset and seemed to clear things up.

1. This could potentially be all sorts of things
Some of the browsers I use, for example, have the following strange behavior: tabs eventually get old and stale and stop working correctly.. The remedy I found: don't re-use tabs too often but open new tabs eventually and close the old ones

When's the last time you closed and relaunched your browser? Have you tried clearing your browser cache? Have you tried deleting your cookies? Are your browser preferences set to give up trying on a webpage too quickly if the browser can't establish a connection immediately?

When's the last time you turned off and restarted your computer? My OS, for example, will gradually choke on garbage if I don't restart it often enough

Are your OS, browser, firewall, and anti-virus up-to-date? When's the last time you scanned for infections, spyware, and malware?

4. Now on the 3rd day after, I think I'm fixed!1
I didn't see your tips until just now, but letting it rumble around in the back of my brain these days, this morning I had the bright idea of Logging OUT, deleting the shortcut from my Favorites, and starting over from a Google Search on "DU."

It seems to have worked!1 I think this was in the general direction of your tips.

What I've done for years is to keep a perpetual Sign-in at the Lobby page as my Favorites link.

Is this the "tab" you refer to? It appears to have been old and broken. As of right now I've started over and have had about 20 minutes of clear sailing.

Thanks!1 I'll be back if things break down and if I CAN get back under those circumstances!1

5. Well, just had a little glitch. After posting in GD, clicked on the DU "Lobby" link
that is, from INSIDE the DU, not from my Favorites link, and got the same IE error page. But closing and re-opening the browser, the Favorites link to Lobby worked fine.

I dunno.

7. Do you get the same problem with other browsers?
Download a free browser other than whatever you're using (Firefox, Google, Opera ...) and see if the problem is your browser

8. Thanks. I'm a nervous-Non-techie, so I've never used anything but what came with the machine
So far there is a vast improvement in the problem, although there *have* been a couple of errors that have been resolved with a Retry.

Basically, it's working overall but with a held breath and crossed fingers at every link.

Thanks, again.

9. It's very easy to download and install another browser. You don't have to throw away
the browser you have, either, so if you don't like a different one, you won't be stuck

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html
http://www.google.com/chrome
http://www.opera.com/download/?custom=yes

10. Installing Firefox in three steps
It's incredibly easy.

1. Go here: www.mozilla.com/firefox and click on 'Windows (8MB)' to begin your download.

2. When it asks you where to save the setup file, just select 'desktop.'

3. After it's done downloading, locate the setup file on your desktop and double click on it to begin the installation. It's automatic from this point on. You will be asked whether you want to make Firefox your default browser. Answer no for now so you can check it out and see if you like it. You will be prompted to import all the stuff you have saved under IE (your favorites, cookies, passwords, etc.). Answer "yes" to all. When it's done, you will have a new program on your desktop that looks like this:

Click on it to run. You will find that Firefox looks a lot like IE (or any other browser for that matter). You will have forward and backward buttons. There will be an address window and a search window. One thing is that what you used to call favorites are now called 'bookmarks' and all your favorites from IE should be there under the bookmarks menu.

You can still run IE. You will just have two browsers on your system.

12. Has anyone told you the good news about Linux?

But that's a story for another day. Right now, trying another browser will help you troubleshoot your current problem by narrowing it down. If the problem persists with Firefox, then you know that maybe it's not IE.

14. Seriously, NOW it has gone to a whole different LEVEL - the CA "Security Suite"
that I renewed/installed 2 weeks ago. Apparently I needed to UNinstall the old year's (same CA). So today I got an Alert saying my product was to expire tomorrow. Calling Tech support, I was told that I needed to UNinstall BOTH versions, then install a Download (since I had mailed the CD to a 3rd/allowed computer). All afternoon, including an hours long scan.

Then the download says the Firewall component can't be installed. THREE chat "Help" sessions and the 3rd one couldn't answer questions directly or clearly, wanted to UNinstall everything again. I refused.

There are TWO 800 #s. The first one is supposed to be free and open 24 hrs. It's NOT open right now, just working hours. The other one is for PAY.

I asked whether I'm safe to use the internet and on the 3rd asking, was told YES. But the firewall is not installed? He said if I terminated the chat, I might ask for a refund if I'm not happy.

I'll call tomorrow, but what is the firewall problem?

3. The only thing IE is good for
is to download a faster, more stable, more secure browser.
