Can I trouble this forum to educate me about smartphone/e-readers?

Since I could never afford any of these things, I really haven't paid much attention. Plus, the technology seems to be advancing monthly, so keeping up with the latest and greatest seems virtually impossible as a newbie to the subject.

Even though it's doubtful I can afford it, I'd really like to understand others' opinions about these gadgets.

Here's what I would really like (maybe it doesn't even exist, maybe it does...like I said, I'm clueless...lol):

1. I really like the touchscreen aspect of what I believe are labeled smartphones now. I don't like the qwerty keyboard thingies; I would prefer the touchscreen approach.

2. I love the idea of being able to download documents to read via an e-reader. I understand you can purchase e-books and subscribe to online newspaper/magazines via Kindle and such, but does a basic e-reader enable one to upload your own Word documents, for example, for ease of reading (versus having to either be at the computer or print out hard copies to read the docs)?

Is there a device -- other than iPhone -- which combines both of these features?
