Idea for a DU Group: Anti-Spam
Just floating an idea here, would anyone be interested in an Anti-Spam/Privacy kind of DU group?

There's tons of information our there on this topic.

There's a very popular Yahoo! group about it that is moderated by some very strong activists on this issue.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Anti-spam/

I'm pretty sensitive to the topic ever since I was a Tech Support Representative at Barnesandnoble.com. We kept getting call after call after call from angry people because there was no way to unsubscribe from the email they were sending. So for about a year, until I left the job to go back to college, I was in charge of collecting the email addresses of people who wished to be unsubscribed and sending them to a contact at the company BN outsourced it's promotional email to. I don't know if they added an unsubscribe link since I left

There is a lot of stuff out there about it, and non DU there's this group, "Free Speech, Press, & Internet" and "Blogging", "Macintosh Users' Group" and "Open Source and Free Software Group" that I will be advertising this idea in, but as a topic, this has the potential to take off.

If you're interested, PM me. I don't come in this group a whole lot.

I will craft a Mission statement and post it here, and send it to anyone who PM's me with an interest.

I almost singlehandedly got the Comic Book DU group up and running, so I can do this, but I need 10 people to agree to participate and/or agree to a mission statement in writing so that I can compile it and write to Skinner.

Warm Regards,
Kire

1. I'd be very interested if you were to include spam faxes

2. I think you would need to include
all types of unwanted marketing, as well as privacy rights and identity theft.

That being said, I think most of this can be covered/incorporated into existing groups, many of which only get a few messages a day.

3. you think so, huh?
how's that?

Maybe if we had groups like this that could really take off, then those other groups with only a few messages a day (or a week) will finally get closed by Skinner.

BTW, I did use the word privacy in the body of my original message.

:ROAR:
