1. Just be aware of what the upgrade procedure now entails...
if people hated Vista, Win7 is going to be far more a headache... (I responded to someone else in the Computer help forum here already, and I'd rather not repeat myself...)

I suspect the activated status helps to eliminate the bug in vista where, in a special way, one can get around needing a pre-installed Windows OS for vista to 'qualify'. Which makes sense; microsoft does not want people (at least in the USA) to pirate or use not-entirely-legal copies... If Microsoft was consistent on its antipiracy beliefs I'd probably side with them, as I too work with IP for a living... pity they're not...

3. On the subject of piracy ...

I just want to reiterate something I've said before in a more expansive way.

I support efforts to prevent theft of intellectual property provided a) the meaning of IP is clearly defined in a way that truly protects and benefits the creators of IP and b) the methods do not hamper my ability to use said IP in a reasonable manner once I've paid to do so.

Microsoft fails both tests consistently. What's worse, the internals of their OS aid others in enforcing draconian so-called piracy protection schemes in ways that amount to extortion.
