Help! Automatic download disabled my pc this week.
I have no idea what was downloaded. That little indication shield was on the turn off button when I shutdown last night, which meant there would be downloads before shutoff. But this morning? Windows wouldn't load until I went back to the LAST CONFIGURATION THAT WORKED.

Something similar also happened earlier in the week. That time, Microsoft (I think) commandeered the pc to tell there was a new feature (in XP?????????????) that would allow my monitor to power down after a set time (pity they wouldn't tell me how it was supposed to power up again) and they wanted to put a new thingie in my bottom righthand tray. There are enough thingies there.

I'm going out of my tiny freaking mind.

Oh, and my dsl has also lost its mind. But this happened in March, too, when I had miserable interrupted service for a month, and found out I could get online IF I TELEPHONED SOMEONE. One phonecall could get me about an hour on the internet. Verizon thinks I'm nuts when I tell them that. Magically, in April the connection was fine again. Then July 1, it's exactly like March. (I've started keeping records. I'm remembering previous outages and it seems like 3 months of good service, hell, three months of good service, hell....and so on.

And I got this error message:

Windows - DELAYED WRITE FAILED

Windows was unable to save C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\qd6lejwr.default\places.sqlite

Data has been lost. This error may be a failure of computer hardware or network.

1. Turn off Automatic Updates
Right click on 'My Computer' icon. Select Properties then Automatic Updates tab. You will not be bothered by them fucking your machine up again.

2. Turn off the auto updates as CT suggests AND
you should run a scan with your anti-virus and malware program.

3. That happens
Typical windows bullshit. An update last summer forced a complete reinstall on me.

1. Always have a back-up. (External drives are dirt cheap these days).

2. Always have a http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page">rescue/boot disk handy.

4. The "Delayed Write" error may be unrelated to your other problems.

Do you have a slave drive? If so you might want to check that the connectors are on good and tight.

When I had that problem before it was when a "Restore" copy was being written on my "D" drive.

Here is something you might want to look at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330174
