AVG free update 7.5 to 8.5 question.
Edited on Tue Mar-24-09 09:31 AM by Kali
Anybody have any problems? The reminder pop-up is annoying me. Is that petty enough to try something else? If so, what do you all recommend? I don't have any real complaints, but have read some grumblings - might there be something better? (oh, xp home if I haven't mentioned it lately)

1. You always want to keep antivirus as current as possible

Download the newest and update. It has better threat analysis than 7.5 among other things. Update all security software as often as possible.

2. I've been waiting to hear what those "in the know" have to say
also. That great big message is there every AM and until I hear from you fine folks that there are no problems, I will hold off. Still have time.

3. I had problems with an AVG update...
it wouldn't finish update OR uninstall, until I used Revo uninstaller. I initially liked AVG because it was light weight. That changed over the years. It let trojans in on a routine basis, as well.

I'm now using Avira, and like it a lot. It's light. Updates are simple. I may try Avast because some folks here like it, just so I can experience the difference. I was tempted to go back to AVG when I read that it now has a spyware that was very effective as a single release. But, malwarebytes satisfied that need. So, I plan to stick with a lighter product, like Avira.

4. I started using the free version of Comodo a few months ago.

It seems to work alright, doesn't bog down my machine, and the reviews I have read are pretty good.

6. Me too, have been using Comodo for at least a year now
I ditched AVG when it got too bloated for me. Comodo had a learning curve, but worth it, imho.

5. I switched to Avira
http://www.free-av.com

AVG 8 was giving me general errors during updates which was annoying. Googling around led me to believe that it was a combination of AVG getting kind of bloated in its maturity and the fact that I'm not running as much memory as I should be.

Happy with Avira so far, but AV programs are no panacea.

7. Time to switch ...

IMO ...

I used to rave about AVG, but it's taken a turn for the worse in the past year or so. It's not a bad product, but it's less streamlined than it was, and the company has started using some marketing tactics I find obnoxious.

I've gone to installing Avast on machines I build/clean. That has an annoying little voice thing "There are UPDATES!" that'll scare the ever loving crap out of you if you're not expecting it, but you can turn that off.

8. Been using Avira for years
(the free one) I have it set to update every morning and do a system scan once a week. Sometimes it finds something and quarantines it. And it's always smooth sailing. Now where's a piece of wood to knock on?

11. You can get a Free copy of 8.5...you just have to dig around on the site
as they don't make it easy to find the FREE copy.

Here's a link:

12. I "upgraded" last time they threatened to stop support
(about 9 mos. ago). It took my husband(a computer whiz), our ISP and Linksys 3 days on the telephone in all combinations and permutations to get me up and running again. I would not try upgrading again. If I can't find anything better, I'll clean out all remaining traces of 7.5 then try to download 8.5 as a new user.
