Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM laptop upgrade kit - $160
Includes the laptop HD and an external case for the old HD. I've heard it's got a lot of rave reviews.

Has anybody else tried it? I'm about to get one...

2. Even if it came with a 3 year warranty?
(I'll look up their QC issues too - thanks for posting. )

3. I've RMA'd about half a dozen over the years.
Including one that failed after 2 months, got replaced and the replacement failed after 6 months.

4. Why I like warranties ...

The only thing that makes me feel better with a warranty is if the product has a track record of your never having to use it. With hard drives in particular, just replacing the physical hardware is the smallest part of the headache.

FWIW, I've had some problems with Hitachi too ... not that particular item, just in general.

5. Hmmm
Well, I did install the product.

It is bloody fast; the WD 120GB drive being 5400RPM, SATA-I (the new model SATA-II, with NCQ and 16mb buffer)...

I bought Acronis TrueImage, so I've no issues when replacing the drive.

Not really louder either... time will tell how the battery life performs.

I hope the new drive will last 3 years, and you're right about the warranty system in general...
