Vista users - any problems with freezing lately?
The last 2 days, I've periodically had to hard-reset my PC.

One monitor will blank, but the other keeps the desktop background intact.

Mouse and keyboard are fine.

System has been operating fine for MONTHS.

Video card (nVidia 8800GTS) runs at stock speeds; 59 degrees C. Main CPU (Intel Q6600) doesn't go over 36 C.)

The last three days I've had DisplayFusion Pro installed. Seems a coincidence, except the same app works perfectly on my XP machine at work.

That could be it; as every diagnostic I've ran so far has come up clean.

And the 3 times the system froze were random; even 3 minutes after booting.

My first thought was either the new software, an updated Vistas component (I have all downloads install automatically), or video card failure -- except I can otherwise run the PC for hours without a single hiccup.

1. Vista is crap.
Duh.

I've had Vista computers freeze on me fresh from the box. It's a big part of why I always recommend against it in spite of the "I LLLLLLLUUURRVVVV VISTA" bunch.

Have you applied the new service pack? Try uninstalling that and see if things go back to "normal". The time frame is about right- if that doesn't do it then take the next obvious step and uninstall DisplayFusion Pro. If you prefer you can do that first to see if it's the problem.

2. Nope. I found out SP1 won't be available to end users until March.
No RC1 crap either.

Yeah, if the problem continues I'll be removing DisplayFusion...

not 1 giant service pack and it is not available for "end users" to download unless they hack their registry. Mid March is target for release. Some "pre-patch" releases have been pushed out to get ready for the bulk of the service pack. 1 of these had a negative affect on my video and caused a similar situation. However your first insightful words were "Vista is crap" well that really helps.

4. Are you sure it is freezing up?
You seem to have dual monitors and you say one is displaying background, other is blank. Mouse and keyboard are fine? This is not a "freeze" as the system is still responding unless i have completely misread your post. That being said, there have been some compatibility releases that caused my video card problems. Even a rollback did not fix it initially. i had to "nuke" all the drivers/software and reinstall.

6. Keyboard and mouse HAD froze, sorry for the confusion - and one update:
Later that day I saw I had to let Vista install an update.

Since then, the computer has behaved.
