ak! What happened to firefox?
There was an update of somekind yesterday along with a need to restart that I blew off - then this morning I got a few permission questions from Comodo about firefox - hit ok and now can't load ANY pages. Using Internet Explorer to do this? Help!

1. Note for reference: FF updates only restart the browser and will reload any open tabs plus an update
tab which you can close and go on.

2. well, I went into Comodo and specifically allowed firefox
to access the web and it seems to be working now. Not sure about the other users on the computer yet but working for me. That was kind of strange, I'd still like to know what went wrong...

5. free firewall program - seems to work pretty good but it has this long "learning" phase
where it is often asking to allow things I sometimes feel clueless about.

4. Possibility ...

You said Comodo asked some security questions initially, which is normal since the footprint of the Firefox executable would have changed. Did you closely read the questions before you clicked "ok"? I've never used Comodo, but I've seen security software ask questions in reverse, i.e. rather than ask "Do you want to allow?" it will say something like "Firewall has blocked <X> for security reasons ..."

Not sure really, but going into Comodo and specifically setting it to allow Firefox to make network connections would have been my first guess of what to do.

7. Me too!
It crashed today, wiped every setting it had, wiped all the settings in Thunderbird, too, which still does not work correctly...Yup, they stuffed this update.

8. I haven't had any problems yet
But I still have to update the Vista install, which is also running Comodo.

9. That's a shame
Have you given FF3 beta a spin? I've been using it for months and I like it. Of course, none of my preferred extensions work yet, save NoScript (the guy's almost manic about tinkering with his program, issuing updates about once a week, so I'm not surprised he's ahead of the curve), but it's worth it to me. They're at long last getting a handle on FF's memory hogging -- it still soaks up a fair bit, but for the first time it actually releases substantial memory when tabs and windows are closed. I no longer have to note open pages I want to revisit after having to shut down FF when it acts like it's slogging through Cheez Whiz. Finally, the browser can stay open until the next OS reboot.

11. This memory thing ...

Tangent ...

I know Firefox does this, but really and truly I have never had a problem with it ... across four separate personal systems so far. Is it because I'm using it on Linux? I don't think that's it, but I've wondered because the general theme of a lot of Linux apps is, if they need it, to use as much memory as is available and then release it when it's not really in use and is needed by another program. I've specifically watched Firefox's memory usage and seen that it has released memory when other progs needed it.

Or maybe I'm not really understanding the issue here.

OnEdit: Realized I should mention this. I never close Firefox until I reboot. Because I tinker a lot, I reboot more often than I'd need to do so otherwise, but it's still not all that often. I recently had my system up for 26 days in a row without a reboot, had Firefox open that entire time, and I never noticed the sluggish behavior of it or anything else that some report.

Not trying to argue. I read enough in the forums to know this is a problem, but it's not something I have experienced enough to notice it, so I'm just wondering what is going on.

10. Really?

Weird. I've updated it on three machines, one Windows and two Linux, and I haven't had a problem.

I do updates "manually," i.e. before Firefox updates itself. You think that might be the issue?

12. Could be,
That's a point I did not consider. I think I shall not use their auto-update thingy any longer.
