So I need to set up a custom modeline for xorg.conf in Ubuntu 11.04.
The backstory: I'm using a 50" Samsung 1080p DLP television as both my TV and my PC's display (yes- it's just awesome). The problem is that the television has an overscan problem when accepting a DVI to HDMI video signal; roughly 2" of display expands beyond the borders of the screen.

In Windows this is not a problem; the NVidia driver for windows contains a handy overscan correction feature specifically to solve this problem. I just set my resolution to "what the hell" by "you've gotta be kidding" (in my case, 1786x994) and I have a nicely scaled display again.

The NVidia driver for Ubuntu (I'm using the recommended latest restricted driver as provided and installed by the "additional hardware" section of Ubuntu's system settings) is far more picky. It will only accept certain, common resolutions, and there's no option to autogenerate an xorg.conf modeline to support oddball settings like mine.

What I need is a process that will allow me to create a custom modeline, add it to the database of acceptable resolutions, add it to xorg.con, and make it available to the NVidia control panel in Ubuntu so I can select it from the list containing all the prepackaged resolutions.

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about here? I (and a whole, whole lot of other people, if I'm to judge from my Googling earlier) am tearing my hair out trying to get the display to, well, display. Any help is greatly appreciated in advance!
