Another "new" 1967 Casserole
Imagine this one: White sauce with sliced olives, add tuna. Put that in a casserole dish.

Biscuits with cheese, like pinwheels. (Roll it out, put cheese on top, roll up like a jellyroll, slice.) Put these on top of the other stuff.

It was kind of like a shortbread thing. The biscuits actually did cook through, and didn't just end up soggy on the bottom. (Stinky Jr. asked if I'd made up the recipe myself, which is like being asked if you made what you're wearing...)

Stinky had seconds.

I balanced it out with cooked zucchini and yellow squash on the side, and a big green salad. Oops -- I forgot the Jello and Rice Krispie bars for dessert! (just kidding.)

(By the way, last time we were at Costco, I picked up the Dessert and Vegetable volumes, too... I'm having fun with these! It makes me want to wear a little apron when I'm cooking.)

:hi:

1. Green olives or black olives.
I think it would probably call for green olives. That just seems more appropriate.

2. Yes, green olives!
My folks always put green olives in tuna salad. I still like that. :)

3. hey!
A friend of mine used to make hash pinwheels. Roll out biscuit (probably bisquick) dough, spread it with canned corned beef hash, roll up jelly roll style, cut, and somehow form into pinwheels. Bake, and top with cheese sauce.

Oh, and how about tuna shortcake? Make a huge plate-sized biscuit. When baked, split and fill with boiled potatoes and onions, chunk tuna, and hard-boiled egg slices. Over the top goes......cheese sauce. My sister made that once.

4. Mrs. Cleaver always wore a dress, stockings and heels with that apron.
Just sayin'.

8. My mother hated that woman with a purple passion
Anyone who washed the kitchen floor in heels and pearls (and a girdle) was ready for the booby hatch.

It had to be Miltown followed by Valium, probably with long pulls on the bottle of cooking sherry.

My childhood was scarred by that woman's image. When I got a little older, I couldn't figure out why the hell she didn't divorce that empty suit Ward.

The only believable character in that stupid series was Eddie Haskell. We all knew at least one of those.

10. My mom, who couldn't ever have weighed more than 125 pounds in her life
(except when pregnant), pulled on one of those things every day. And worse, they had those garter clips on them, and she put on "nylons" that way. Then the slip.... I couldn't stand it for five minutes!!!

7. That one does sound good
although I'd have to come up with something else on top.

Casseroles are great poor folks' food if you can afford the gas or electric bill to bake them. They're all the best winter fare since they're really satisfying.

I'm eating Chinese today and tomorrow, then I'm going to make another huge pot of posole verde. I've been alternating it with chicken soups.

11. I thought of serving the tuna stuff OVER the biscuit things
I was afraid the biscuit things would stay soggy in the white sauce matter containing the fish material, given the liquid concoction...

But I had to experience the full conglomeration of substances, a la 1967. :D

13. If you're going to wear the little apron, you have to wear the heels, too (June Cleaver style).
