My spouse put my Calphalon One pan in the DISHWASHER
I bought one this summer, a little fry pan to see if it would work. I love it and thought I could buy a set.

Spouse is a "put everything in the dishwasher" type.

I thought I could trust him. When I bought my new toy home, I told him hand wash only. Made him repeat what I said. He said hand wash only.

Until one day I found the pan in the cabinet, covered with a white powder. Food won't stick unless I grease it up with non-stick spray. I was devastated. The spouse admitted he put it in the dishwasher. Oh, I was supposed to hand wash it, I recall him saying.

I'm going to stick with stainless steel. Dayum.

3. Kill him now......
Or at least shove him in the dishwasher and send him through a Pot cycle. (only kidding)

In all seriousness though I had a friend once whose husband put a piece of her china in the dishwasher. She very calmly took the entire set of china out of her cabinet and methodically smashed every last piece right in front of him. She then called me and we went out for cocktails. They divorced several years after this incident...but that's another story.

Goes to show you that you just can't expect other people to always take care of your beloved tools and gadgets. I cringe every time my husband goes for one of my knives and he's never allowed to use my omelet pan.

My best advice for spouses like this (and I have one) is to just love them and expect the worst when they are in the kitchen because they know not what they do.

4. Its a two-way street .......

No way would I trust Sparkly with my power tools ..... or my mechanic's tools ...... or even at my fax machine.

On edit ...... and then there's Sparkly Jr. She has one pan she's allowed to use. That's it. But now she's asking to learn to cook (she has step-brother envy these days) like my boys can. That's a good thing. I'll let her use the stainless next (maybe a year or three :) ). Maybe by the time she's 40 (she's 18 now), I'll let her touch the copper.

5. Good advice
Having been with the spouse for a couple of decades, I have learned to lower my expectations on kitchen toys. I let my guard down this time.

I have my knives, he has his.

The cookware, I'll be looking for dishwasher safe stuff for now on. He likes and insists on cooking - - he is good in the kitchen for something.

7. I'll be PC. Had it been a set thrown in the dishwasher --
that would have been a deal breaker...

Thank goodness I bought only one pan to try out.

open to the pages for divorce lawyers along with a picture of your desecrated pan.

I caught my beloved brother putting my Cast Iron skillet in the dishwasher once. His whole life passed before my eyes and I contemplated murder. Thank goodness I caught him in time. A jury would not have convicted me, I am sure. Not here in Texas where everything is cooked in cast iron.

9. I've only lived in one place with a dishwasher, never opened it
and the only thing I ever used anybody else's dishwasher for was sterilizing beer bottles back in my homebrew days. I've watched too many people washing their dishes and then putting them into the dishwasher to run through the cycle. Honest to gawd, why??? If you're going to wash your dishes, don't waste the water washing them again, just use the damned thing for an expensive dish rack.

Rant over.

11. Not only does my wife put my Henckels in the dishwasher
she insists on putting them blade side up.

I usually wash them by hand, but once in a while I don't get to them and in the process of cleaning up she does that - especially with the smaller ones (which are harder to see), it's just asking to slice your finger open.

One of the first things I learned in a restaurant was you don't put knives blade-side up, unless you want to be a multi-finger amputee.

She means well, but...

12. Knives in dishwasher...yow!
You got that right, that is a hazard. How old are your knives? Wooden handle types?

I will admit I had trained the spouse on handwashing my 20+YO Henckels, which are in pretty good condition, but then I am the only one who will use them...He has his "Brand X" variety in the knife rack, and he will occasionally put them in the machine...
