Does anyone have a recipe for Sauerkraut balls?
My Berliner grandmother used to make these, and they were terrific. As I remember, they had sauerkraut, corned beef, and (I think) cream cheese inside, were coated with something, deep-fried and served hot. She used to pair them with coarse dark german mustard as a dipping sauce.

I've found a couple of recipes on the web but they don't seem quite right - I'm wondering if we have any German cooks out there who might have a family recipe. I'm having a football party in a couple of weeks and this seems like a good NFL snack.

Thanks!

1. Found this on the net
Here's one with all those ingredients. It calls for rolling in corn flakes before frying.
http://www.disabilitynetwork.com/recipe/sauerkrautballs.html

1 Can Corned Beef
1 Can Sauerkraut
2 Oz. Cream Cheese
1 Tsp. Dry Onion
Corn Flakes
Flour
Milk

Squeeze the juice from one can sourkrout and chop fine.
Mix Corned Beef, Cream Cheese, Sauerkraut and
Dry Onion together and begin to 3/4 inch balls.
Roll the balls into the flour and dip into the milk then
roll into the corn flakes. Deep fry till golden brown.
Deep fry approximately 1 minute.

2. this looks good
I don't think she used corn flakes for the coating, but now that I look at that recipe I like the idea. I'm gonna do it!

Thanks!

3. You can experiment with the coatings
I hope this turns out well for you. It's a very unusual dish but has me intrigued as I like all the ingredients.

5. thanks again!
I'm pretty sure my Oma made these with some kind of bread crumb coating, but I like the idea of corn flakes - it'll make a crunchier coating.

I know these sound kind of weird, but they're really good. The cream cheese takes some of the edge off of the sauerkraut and they're just a good hot winter snack.

7. made 'em yesterday as a trial run....
And ooohhh, were they good.

I tinkered with the recipe a little. The cream cheese I upped to 4 oz, added a tiny bit of minced garlic and substituted about three quarters of a teaspoon of chopped shallots for the dried onions. I also threw in a few minced chives.

Heaven! And the crushed corn flakes made for a perfect coating.

It would be interesting to use a pumpernickel bread crumb coating and dip them into thousand island dressing - sort of like a reuben with a twist.
