Some folks have no idea how the real world lives.

What's the furthest you've traveled - just for a meal
Chowhound's FAQ section describes a Hound as someone who "won't hesitate to go far, far out of their way for even slightly better. "

Is it true? How far have you traveled for the SOLE purpose of having a meal?

I'm not talking here about mini-trips and long weekends where you go somewhere nice and have some good meals while you're there. And I'm not talking about making a business trip and eating on your employer

I'm talking about going somewhere just to eat at a particular restaurant at your own expense; eating; perhaps staying overnight if it's a distance.

Mine's a flight Manchester to Amsterdam to eat a rijstaffel at Tempo Doeloe. Flew one day, ate in the evening; flew back next day. Great meal. 90 minute flight - not sure of actual distance, but I claim extra points for needing to have a passport :-)

And the rest of the world just just strives to eat to live. This website posting/thread really opened my eyes how very extravagant some folks are.

1. I just watched something else
that showed someone eating a $1000 ice cream dish with gold and caviar on it.

It's disgusting how much money some people spend on extravagant extras when so many are starving. The furthest I've ever gone just to eat was maybe half an hour away. Man, I would love to go to Amsterdam, though!!

3. The best food in town
is at a combination Vietnamese restaurant and car inspection station and it's right in my neighborhood so I don't have to go far. The ambience is a little rough but the food is divine. I also get my car inspected there.

The same went for my last neighborhood in Boston, a natural foods/seafood restaurant that was superb and only a 10 minute walk. It was expensive, so I reserved it for my birthday and other celebrations.

I joked about celebrating my 40th birthday by flying to Paris for dinner, only I got pneumonia instead.

I do travel about 120 miles for apple cider in the fall, but that's only because it's a roadside stand on the way home from the Wool Festival in Taos.

The rest of the time I do my own cooking and I pretty much eat to live. The days of eating junk to try to make myself feel better are over. My days of traveling without intending to spend at least 2 weeks on the ground are LONG over.

4. A couple years ago I drove
6 1/2 miles into N. Raleigh just to get a chicken dinner at Boston Market.

Not something I normally do, but I just had a craving.

5. Forty miles for a box of Popeye's chicken
But that was before gas prices went up.

6. I don't recall. But I do know that these days I am content to WALK
less than a mile to any of about a half dozen excellent little eateries in my neighborhood. I chose my new apartment carefully, primarily by its location.

There is a bus stop two blocks away, and two MAJOR bus lines within half a mile.

The USA is now a Third World country. I plan to live accordingly.
