12. OP's pic is a Coopers hawk. Skittles pic looks like Merlin hawk
or ferruginous hawk, Size would be the big difference and no frame of reference. Ferruginous is larger than the Merlin with a wingspan of about 56" and about 2 feet tall. Merlin has a 24 inch wing span, bird is about a foot tall

Cooper has horizontal-ish stripes on chest, like a tweed vest.Pic in OP is Coopers hawk Merlin or ferruginous has more vertical markings on chest.

So says the wildlife manager at the next desk with his bird book open.

3. Looks like a red-shouldered hawk.
Edited on Mon Mar-15-10 10:57 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
It could also be a broad-winged hawk, but it looks from your photo that it has the rust-brown shoulders and speckled back of a red-shouldered hawk. They are also larger than the broad-winged hawk.

16. I think so too after looking at my field guide.
The Cooper's hawk (#2) looks like a juvenile. Beautiful birds!
