Axis of Evil Conventional scientific wisdom says the universe is roughly the same in all places and in all directions. But earlier this year, João Magueijo and a colleague found indications to the contrary. The duo noticed an apparent alignment in the cosmic microwave background, the residual afterglow from the Big Bang that permeates the universe. Instead of being arranged randomly, the hot and cold regions appear to line up in the same direction, a pattern that Magueijo christened the Axis of Evil.
