When teen age boys wore Bermudas:
AKA " I remember the evolution of Bermuda shorts on men."

This post got nada in the Lounge.
Maybe it's more suited to here?
;-)

I was born in 1941 and was in high school circa 1957.
Boys did not wear Bermudas at school.
Ever.
Neither did girls, for that matter.
(This was in Birmingham, Alabama.)
Just wasn't in our accepted (peer-approved-for-school) wardrobe.
Don't know that there was any 'official' school prohibition.
You just didn't.

A somewhat geeky friend of mine, not 'popular' amongst the rank-and-file students at all, was in a bicycle accident. Skinned up his knees and shins pretty badly.
Had bulky bandages.
His mom, a very practical woman, sent him to school in a pair of (HORRORS!) BERMUDA SHORTS.

Well, the world ceased turning on it's axis.
Traffic came to a complete halt.
As he innocently walked up to the building a HUGE crowd of kids gathered.
They taunted him unmercifully.
"Hey! What happened to your pants?"
"Aren't you old enough for long pants yet?"
"Did your mama dress you this morning?"

The vice-principal (our feared disciplinarian, the 'paddler') had to come out and escort him inside.
To the office.
His mother was called and told to come and fetch him.
He was 'causing a disturbance'.

We guys did begin to wear Bermudas in the summer, but initially with knee socks, a la British military.
We were very modest, way back.
;-)

We've come a long way since then.
Knee length shorts are an accepted part of school 'uniforms' now.
And so it goes.
:-)

1. Wearing knee socks was sissy...
What kind of a high school was that?

4. Never worn AT school.
Just during summer.
I dunno.
Knee socks were just the 'fashion' then.

2. I don't remember boys OR girls wearing Bermuda's EVER
They, and me, wore JEANS or maybe cut off jeans, year round. Well, I am talking about the 60s and the so called hippie generation. Plus, this was in NYC where BLACK is, and has been, the local color.

I was born in 1948.

5. I was born in 46 and when I was in HS, during the summers...
everyone wore Bermuda shots, boys and girls. It was the in-thing around these parts (MA). I still love the look of them.

3. My high school had a dress code until 1969 (graduated in '70)
but I don't think anyone ever thought to wear shorts to school once the dress code was over. It was a pretty strict code for the times - guys couldn't wear their hair long enough to touch their shirt collars! This was a public high school, too.

6. Seen a young man the other day with his pants about five inches above his knees. Not kidding.
At a time ('58) in the Army we were allowed to wear burmudas (khaki) shorts as part of our class A uniform in the Airborne. Don't know when it changed. Or maybe they still do.

7. We had dress codes
Up until my senior year, a month before graduating.

May, 1970, the school finally allowed the boys & girls to wear jeans. Before that, boys had to wear regular trousers & girls had to wear a dress or skirt.

This was the day of mini-skirts, but our school said our dress had to be no shorter than the top of the knee cap.
I hated the one-piece gym suit they made us wear. Ours was an ugly green & awfully uncomfortable.

High school was fun.
