Race discrimination at Chicago bar during senior class trip
http://www.studlife.com/news/2009/10/18/students-protest-race-discrimination-at-bar-in-chicago-during-senior-class-trip/
Around 200 Washington University students participated in a protest this morning in Chicago in response to what is being called an act of racial discrimination that occurred at Mother’s Night Club Original bar Saturday night.
Six black University students were denied entry into the bar, even though approximately 200 other members of the senior class had already been allowed in.
The trip to the bar was part of the Senior Class Council-sponsored trip to Chicago.
Two of the students rejected from the nightclub were Iboro Umana and Regis Murayi, the internal vice president and treasurer of Senior Class Council, respectively.

According to a press release from Senior Class President Fernando Cutz, the six black students were told they were not allowed into the bar because of their failure to comply with its “baggy jeans” policy. A few white students who had already been admitted then came out to demonstrate that their jeans were more “baggy,” but the black students were still denied admission.
The black students offered to change their clothes, but the bar manager said they would still not be let in, as he did not think they were “trustworthy,” the press release said. The white students were allowed to return to the bar.

Tara Benesch, a senior on the trip who went to the bar, said, “Honestly if I’d known that weren’t allowed, I wouldn’t have wanted to be there either.”

In response to the incident, students staged a 15-minute protest this morning outside the Hotel Indigo, which is where the seniors had been staying and which is near the bar.

The protest occurred at 11 a.m., the originally-scheduled time for the seniors’ departure to St. Louis.

Students at the protest held signs and flyers with slogans like, “Mothers don’t hate.”

2. Really nothing new for that bar...
Once it gets "too dark" in there, they limit then entry of "some people"...

It's been going on for years.

4. CLUBS HAVE DRESS CODES- GET OVER IT
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 03:51 PM by WOP
If you believe this is racist, you need to get your heads checked. CLUBS HAVE DRESS CODES.

At the very worst, you could call it social discrimination, but racist? Absolutely not.
I myself had a 5 year career as a bouncer/doorman at several NY clubs. I don't care what color you are- respect the dress code you don't get in. I rejected several white people each night. Pull your pants up, turn your hats forward, no white T's and you're good. It's as simple as that. Clubs aren't publicly traded franchises. One club I worked at had a dress code of NO SPORTS ATTIRE. I guess they're racist toward everyone? There's a fine dining restaurant in town that turned me down because I wasn't wearing a suit jacket. If they said no to a Latino, you'd call them racists.

There is also a flip side too it. Some clubs tell the bouncers to enforce the dress code when necessary. 90% of the time it's when the patrons are loud and obnoxious, already drunk or giving the staff a hard time. If the bouncer says there's a dress code and you start yelling at him for it, it doesn't matter if you change into a tuxedo- you're not getting in. PERIOD. The other 10% of the time is when you think they don't have money and by that, I have rejected every single race in the world.

I'm tired of people pulling out the race card on night clubs. You think they like to reject business? Bouncers talk to thousands of people a week, they know who's going to be a problem. I don't care "how dark" it is. If you dress like Carlton Banks and we have room- you're in. I also don't care if you're Donald Trump. If you're drunk- you're done.

But what do I know? The same as you guys: NOTHING. We weren't there. Show me evidence that these kids weren't acting up with the bouncer. Not a far stretch for college kids if you ask me. I've been to MOTHERS and I know they're good people that don't want to deny entry to anyone. If you look at the photo's on the club's websites, you'll see that plenty of black people as well as other races: http://www.rushanddivision.com/photos.html

Here's a pic with the clubs "racist" Manager

swear, some activists are so fueled with anger, if I said "what's up brother?" they'd think it was racist.

3. We take our segregated city for granted
I'm glad the students protested. I didn't grow up in Chicago but I've spent a lot of time here the last five years. I remain amazed at how people take racial discrimination here for granted. I've heard it referred to as the nation's most segregated city, surpassing the South, where more people have had to examine their attitudes. It may be part of the same attitude that tolerates government corruption and gangsters here.
