Anybody doing a Spring Equinox Fast?
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 07:21 PM by Dover
I call it spring cleaning.

Between now and the full moon on the 28th I'll begin my fast. First three days of just
water followed by three days of fresh fruit juice and then the introduction of solid veggies.
I've done 3 day fasts before and felt great. But haven't done a week yet.

Anybody do fasting as a regular thing (2 or more times a year?)

1. No. I like to eat. IMHO there is no medical rationale for it.

4. ha! Makes me wonder about the origins of the word 'fast'...
Personally for me it's a comtemplative period, a time to slow down, meditate and do mild exercise outdoors.

9. Interesting! I vote for "pastu".

According to that site it seems there is no hard and 'fast' historical explanation for all the uses of that word.

3. Nope
I celebrate spring by killing a fatted lamb and grilling the little guy with tarragon and garlic. MMMM

7. Nope. No fasting for me, thanks.

But I'm curious. Why do you think such a thing is beneficial in any way? I can't imagine any medical reason for it, and no biological reason, either. Humans eat when they have food. There is absolutely nothing in our biology that will be improved by fasting, as far as I can tell.

So, if you have a rational, evidence-based reason for it, I'd be interested to hear it.

16. It removes toxins by allowing the body rest
from digestion.

10. Fast 3 days each week
Usually MWF. The other days, use my juicer and eat raw veggies. I do splurge once in a while on vacations, holidays and sometimes a good weekend burger.

12. Wow. I've heard about regular fasting. It sounds like you have a mostly liquid diet.
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 12:29 PM by Dover

How long have you been on this diet, and what changes have you noticed? What were your initial reasons for going on it?

In the past I've fasted four times a year for three days each (on solstices and equinoxes) which, for me at least, seems to do the trick for body, mind and spirit. I just thought I'd try extending mine this year to a week.

11. No. I don't think it's a good idea.
Sends mixed signals to your metabolism. Can be dangerous for some people.

17. Maybe a water fast, especially if one is very toxic (takes lots of med or is an alkie)
But a short-term fast is very good:)

13. I used to go on 5 day fasts as a teenager
but that was such a long time ago. It was special. It put me in a contemplative state. I feel that I have too many people and animals depending on me to be on the ball and able to work hard physically...so I don't think so for now. But you got me thinking about it. Enjoy the extra time and lightness of spirit.

I'm glad to see you posting again, Dover, I have this idea that you have been away and I missed your posts.

14. Hi Tumbulu!
:hi: So good to see you too!

You had more discipline as a teenager than I did. It seems I was always hungry back then...lol.
It is difficult to allow for these 'timeouts' as a busy adult, but so necessary for me.

Yes, I've been pretty scarce at DU as my focus has been elsewhere.

15. uh, no. can't imagine why I would
I don't see any reason to fast. Ever.

Of course, I also have a medical condition that does not tolerate not eating, so...it would be a bad idea for me, anyway.

The spring equinox is something I'm much more likely to celebrate by feasting (though because of the afore-mentioned medical condition - my feasting is well-controlled) and enjoying life...seems a lot more in tune with the idea of the spring equinox than fasting.
