High Levels of Vitamin D in Older People Can Reduce Heart Disease and Diabetes
Middle aged and elderly people with high levels of vitamin D could reduce their chances of developing heart disease or diabetes by 43%, according to researchers at the University of Warwick.

A team of researchers at Warwick Medical School carried out a systematic literature review of studies examining vitamin D and cardiometabolic disorders. Cardiometabolic disorders include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.

Researchers looked at 28 studies including 99,745 participants across a variety of ethnic groups including men and women. The studies revealed a significant association between high levels of vitamin D and a decreased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (33% compared to low levels of vitamin D), type 2 diabetes (55% reduction) and metabolic syndrome (51% reduction).

Dr Franco said: “We found that high levels of vitamin D among middle age and elderly populations are associated with a substantial decrease in cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

“Targeting vitamin D deficiency in adult populations could potentially slow the current epidemics of cardiometabolic disorders.”

2. If you have belly fat you need to take 3000mg of vitamin D a day according to my dad's doctor.

4. I take 3000. I'm trying to loose my belly and just trashed my diet today.
I've been on Atkins off and on for 1 1/2 months. Lost 20 pounds. But I miss my carbs so today I had a cookie. Then I had fishsticks and potatoes. Then cake. Tomorrow I'm back to the Atkins diet and by vitamins. I really wish I had a fast metabolism cause I certainly love to eat. I hear ya!

12. Oh yeah been there for sure
I was following your theads in teh Lounge about your efforts with Atkins. Nver mind the backsliding--you're doing great!

I did a nearly no-carb diet about 10 years ago (although it wasn't Atkins), on the direction of my holistic doctor. That was after I was finally diagnosed as hypothyroid, but I had gone undiagnosed for so long that I had gained a LOT of weight and my blood sugar was way too high. I lost about 12 lbs. and was thrilled...and then my body got straight, my ovarian cysts went away with the glucophage I was taking, and I got pregnant. Yippee yay and all that, but then I was back to square one on the weight front! x(

I even gained more weight this past year because I've been eating carbs a lot (I loves me my potatoes), I've been working so much I haven't been exercising, plus my kid just doesn't sleep--and with a disrupted sleep schedule, I might as well not bother trying to lose weight again, but then again I can't keep going on like this! Ew!

Anyway, keep it up, AG--you can do it!

14. So hard to take care of yourself if you child isn't sleeping. It must be very hard
to find time for yourself and do all the things that take time (like cooking healthy and excercising). But thanks for the encouragement. I need it.

5. Is that to protect your heart

6. I don't know why. I just know what the doctor said. It could even have something to do with
metabolism of vitamin D if you are very large. Who knows. I just know that while I have belly fat I'm taking the 3000mg. I wouldn't want to go to the trouble of taking vitamin D and not be taking a therapeutic dose because it sounds so helpful in so many ways. Why it even fights cancer.

10. That page has some pretty significant factual errors.
The most remarkable one is that our skin does NOT make Vitamin D; it makes the chemical precursors of it, and Vitamin D is assembled from that. In that manner, the body regulates how much D it produces, because it is a fat-soluble vitamin and you CAN take too much in the form of supplements.
