Does anyone have a home remedy for poison ivy on the crotch?
I've mostly resisted the temptation to claw through my pants to scratch my great balls of fire. Washing several times a day and dabbing with talcum powder has helped but I'm begging for the magic cure.

about 30% talcum powder, 70% baking soda.

8. Calamine lotion is good
very gentle stuff and will stop the itch.

There is also an aloe vera benedryl gel which works too.

*resisting mightily the urge to ask how you got into this predicament* ;-)

32. Hi BOSSHOG. I had written a substantial post on how I had the
same problem a few weeks ago and how I remedied it but your post was moved and I lost everything I had written x(.

Suffice it to say that medicated calamine lotion (I used Walgreen's Calahist) works great but you MUST keep the area CLEAN (I cleaned it with soap/water then alcohol swab) and, most importantly, DRY. Repeated until rash dried out and on the way to healing.

I feel for you buddy and wish you a speedy recovery. =)

23. Your clothes and shoes
People walk through and get exposed to poison ivy and it is on their clothes. People even know sometimes and will wash all their clothes as they should, but forget their shoes and shoe laces. Put your shoes on, get the toxin on your fingers, and then go scratch that itch down under.

38. Calamine just doesn't work
although when you first apply it, the cool feeling is soothing.

The best bet is over the counter cortisone cream to reduce inflammation and suppress the allergic reaction, which is what poison ivy is.

Next time you take a dump in the woods, watch what you're wiping your arse with.

9. Couldn't make this up if I tried. Jewel weed.
It should be easy to find on the web. It usually grows in wet cool areas like along creeks. Mash it and apply to the area. It is very slimy when mashed, one way to tell you have the right stuff.

I feel for you man, I really do.

If the rash is really bad you may need to see your doctor to get a prescription for steroids. Otherwise, about all you can do is keep washing regularly, try cold compresses, and use over-the-counter steroid creams and calamine lotion.

19. Lots of booze and mittens
would be my advice. I've only had poison ivy once and that was only a couple years ago and the thing I found that gave me some relief was clorox bleach. I didn't have it on my private parts, only on my arms so I'm not sure about using that bleach on your happies. I can tell you it burned like hell but it seemed to take the itch away for a while. Good luck

20. Oatmeal paste.
It itches like hell itself (so does Calamine for that matter) as it dries, but it seems to extract the poison. Get some adult diapers so you don't make a mess as it flakes off.

http://www.naturalnews.com/023507_poison_ivy_natural_remedies_silver.html

* Stop the itch of a poison ivy rash and prevent it from spreading with the following homemade paste: Mix one tablespoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon of peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) with 1 to 2 cups green clay, and add enough water to form a paste. Apply the paste liberally to the rash and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Store leftover paste in a tightly sealed jar and reapply as needed. The remedy soothes the itch by absorbing the irritating plant oils and drying the rash. It also works for poison oak.

* Hot water and a banana. Take as hot a shower as you can stand for as long as you can. It will feel good and help relieve the itching. Then take a banana peel and rub it on the infected area. The itch should be gone for eight to twelve hours.

* Watermelon. Take watermelon (the rind and the meat) and glide it over the rash. Let it dry naturally. Within a day, the condition should improve greatly.

* Baking soda and coffee. First put about a half a cup baking soda in a bowl and slowly add cool coffee to make a thick paste. Then apply the paste liberally to the affected area and allow to dry. The poison will flow out of the blisters like water.

* Turmeric and lime or lemon juice. Mix one tablespoon of turmeric spice with roughly equal parts of lime or lemon juice to form a thick paste. Carefully apply to the afflicted skin. This remedy stains, and stings ever so slightly, but works miraculously. For avoiding stains on clothes, furniture or carpet, use it in the bathtub, so the bright yellow stuff doesn`t fall down and make a mess. Let it sit on your skin for fifteen minutes, then wipe off excess. Some stains will likely remain. By the next day you will be astonished at how the ivy has dried up and nearly vanished.

* Poke salad root. Boil the root of a poke salad plant until it turns into a paste form. It will have a strong odor. Then, once it has cooled enough not to scald, rub it on the infected area until you can feel it "burn or sting". It should neutralize the poison ivy overnight.

* Dishwashing liquid. Rub dishwashing liquid onto skin area and within 15 to 20 minutes the itch should disappear. Do not wash off until the next morning and then reapply. Within a couple of days the skin area should clear. This is also good for mosquito bites.

* Burdock roots. Make a strong tea with burdock roots and apply to the skin. Let it dry and re-apply as often as needed. It relieves the itching immediately.

* Potato. Blend a potato in a blender until it becomes a rough pasty blob. Put it on some plastic wrap and wrap it around the affected area. Plastic wrap works better than towels. If you are treating your face, poke two holes for nostrils so you can breathe. Leave it on for an hour or so, and the next day the bubbles should be gone and the skin should turn yellowish and start flaking off. It will probably still itch but should itch much less, and the itching should soon go away. Rub the affected areas to remove excess, but do not rub too hard or pick at the affected areas. Use vitamin E or lotion to help the new skin look and feel better.

* Peachtree leaves. Get some leaves from a peach tree, boil them and then let the water cool. Take a cotton ball and apply the liquid to the affected areas. Works almost overnight and should be almost completely clear within two-three days.

* Oatmeal. Run a warm bath and fill an old sock with oatmeal. While soaking in the tub, take the sock of oatmeal and gently rub it all over the affected areas.

* Epsom Salts. Make a paste and rub it on the affected area or just soak the area. Either way is good.

* Help stop the spread of infection from inadvertent scratching by washing the hands with a colloidal silver product, such as a colloidal silver soap or just regular colloidal silver. Pay particular attention to the areas underneath the fingernails and use a fingernail scrub brush on those areas.

* Colloidal silver and aloe vera make a good soothing, healing and disinfecting combo.

A couple of other home, but not exactly "natural" remedies that are effective are:

* Hemorrhoid ointment or liquid Blistex. Smear it on the areas affected to relieve itching and clear up the infection within 24 hours or so.

* Clear fingernail polish. This can be used to coat the affected areas to prevent spreading and lessen itching.

26. IANAD: Antihistimines and Burow's solution cold compresses.
If you're blistered, seek medical treatment. You need corticosteroids.

Burow's solution (sometimes called Domeboro) is available OTC (aluminum acetate in water). Ask at the pharmacy. Bentonite (a type of clay) packs sometimes help.

Use the best antihistimine you can take.

How -- no. I don't want to know.

One further point -- do not touch or handle the clothing in which this incident occurred. You might get the urishol out, but you might not, and if you don't, you'll be repeating this. Pitch them. Don't recycle, don't burn. This is what the landfill is best for.

29. This is one time that a call or visit to the doctor is warranted.
The problem is that the reaction to poison ivy is an allergy. The oil may be long gone, but the reaction can feed on itself and spread. Catch it early before you end up on high doses of Prednisone.

almost every year
it would make my face puff up and swell my eyes shut

they would give me a steroid injection in the butt and send me on my way with a prescription for pills (probably more steroids, I don't remember)

sat on old shower curtain

used a solution of white vinager and water and dabbed all places

this is not an instant cure. it can sting. will halt itching for awhile.

keep area open to the air (if possible) closed up in clothing, the heat builds and itching becomes awful.

mary jane will help your mental condition.

it takes TIME to get rid of the stuff.

good luck.

41. Zanfel is a OTC treatment that can work.
If it's not a severe case, it might do the trick. It's not cheap maybe $30 for a tube. But if it's a mind case, it will knock it out. The problem is the oil from the PI that gets on the skin. Zanfel is a scrub that combines with the oil and you can rinse it off. It's a bit abrasive, so where you are infected will be a bit more problematic. Zanfel does work though. Good luck to you there Chief.
