US Swine Flu Cases Grow to Nearly 18, 000
Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 10:56 AM by steven johnson
For all of the hype, the swine flu is continuing its relatively benign spread throughout the world. So far, swine flu has caused 144 deaths, compared with ordinary flu that kills up to 500,000 people a year. Most people who have caught the swine flu have only mild symptoms and don't need medical treatment. http://
WHO: Swine Flu Pandemic Has Begun, 1st in 41 Years

ATLANTA (AP) -- Nearly 5,000 new U.S. swine flu cases have been reported in the last week, due partly to its continuing spread in the Northeast.

The number of deaths rose from 27 to 45. That's according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which released new figures Friday. There are nearly 18,000 probable and confirmed cases now, found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The pandemic seems to be waning in many parts of the country. However, cases continue to spread in New England, New York and New Jersey.

1. The death rate is approximately in line with the presence of serious underlying

2. The same flu that hits at this time of year often makes
a return in the fall in a more virulent form. That's what the 1918 flu epidemic did. That's where the concern lies about this particular flu.

5. "Our doctor...thought about 1 in 10 cases were 'official diagnoses'...the rest called 'probable' but
were in fact cases of swine flu. I asked her if I could take the official stats I was hearing and multiply them by a factor of 10 to get a reasonable prevalence rate, and she said, 'that sounds about right, at least by the DPH's standards'.

It was the worst episode of the flu either one of us has had."
