Vaccine pulled over bacteria fear
Thousands of doses of the meningitis C vaccine have been withdrawn by the manufacturer Novartis following fears of contamination.

It is understood that the move was taken after samples from two batches were found to contain a bacterium.

The government's medicines agency said contaminated vaccine had not been distributed to the UK and the move was "entirely precautionary".

And there is "no reason" for UK children to be at any risk, it added.

1. How many of the bad batch were used?
how many children exposed to this risk?

2. None, this is how the system is supposed to work
with every batch sampled for things like bacterial contamination before it is released to the public.

6. I know, because I called her so many names.

Like "shill" and "troll" and a "sick puppy" and a "republican" and a "pro-pharma whore"...

Oh...wait a minute...those are the names that she called me! How silly of me to get that reversed...

See, my theory is that people tune out when they can't argue the facts. They'd just rather pretend that they don't exist. If you ignore all the people that have different opinions, then the world is a pretty bright and sunny place, isn't it? Hey - isn't that how this whole Iraq war thingy got started?

I guess I'll be getting slapped onto your ignore list soon, then.

"GPs who received the batch which has been recalled have been contacted by the Department of Health."

Wonder if the docs are calling parents?

15. Good. The system works like it is supposed to work
For all those freaking out over this, how about an example from my line of work.

I work as a lab tech in the food industry. A few weeks ago we found coliform bacteria in a batch of sour cream. Did we tear out our hair, scream "Sour cream is toxic, no one should ever eat sour cream again!" and shut down the plant that produced it? No. We put the sour cream on hold, ensuring that none of it reached the store shelves. We retested, and re-retested numerous samples to confirm the contamination. We tested the products run before and after this batch to ensure there was no cross-contamination. When we were satisfied that we had caught all the bad sour cream, we ordered it destroyed. The plant made a new batch of sour cream to replace that which was lost, it tested clean, and it was shipped on it's way.

Novartis did exactly what where supposed to do, and ensured that none of this vaccine reached the public. Note that they didn't wait until reports started coming in of sickened children. They were proactive in their approach, and they should be commended for this.

18. not their first problem
Hopefully there will be a major investigation of their operations by the FDA!!

"If Baxter's name sounds familiar it may be because almost exactly a year ago they were in the news over a series of fatal allergic reactions among dialysis patients who used the blood thinner heparin they manufactured. It turned out their heparin came from China and contained an adulterant, oversulfated chondroitin sulfate. Patients in six countries and over a dozen states in the US had serious adverse reactions and more than 80 deaths."
