Group mulls try to ban gay marriage (Massachusetts)
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 02:27 PM by meegbear
The success of a measure to ban gay marriage in California has inspired local opponents to consider mounting another signature drive to get the issue on the ballot in Massachusetts.

"We’re much encouraged by the results in California, and there’s no doubt in our minds, had we been on the ballot Tuesday, our measure would have won," said Kris Mineau, president of the Massachusetts Family Institute, which opposes gay marriage.

Whether the group will launch a signature drive next year, Mineau said, remains to be seen.

"We have to survey the political landscape," he said, noting that Massachusetts is the only state that requires a citizen’s petition for an amendment to the state constitution to be approved twice by the Legislature, which it refused to do last year.

If the group does decide to start a petition drive next year, Mineau said, ". . . we will have assistance from around the country because Massachusetts and Connecticut remain ground zero in the battle for the definition of marriage. They’re the only states that have same-sex marriages by court decree. Neither state has allowed citizens to vote on the definition of marriage."

3. They tried already ...
the ballot question was submitted to the legislature and it narrowly passed. So when the next session came up, it was blocked by other bills, so it never reached the floor and voted on the second time.

A simple and effective measure in a blue, blue state.

4. Let them try
Thanks to Prop 8 we've been contemplating a move out of this state that openly said we hate you f*gs so much we'll gladly take away your existing rights and enshrine discrimination in the constitution. Whether it would be to MA or CT was the question. If I have to go to MA and fight those a$$hats tooth and nail I will. I'm sick to death of them thinking they can run everybody's lives with their religion and intolerance. There are several theocracies in the world they can go to if that's what they want.

it's another world from CA, though. I lived in San Diego, LA, and SF during the 80's and early 90's. :hi:

7. RI
recognizes marriages performed in MA - and I think RI is a much nicer place than MA, but then again, I'm biased :)

Actually, all of the three are nice. Eastern CT is cheaper than Western and Western MA is cheaper than Eastern. Unemployment is high in RI right now, but the cost of living is cheaper in RI than it is in MA or CT.

There are haters here; it's not paradise, but the mayor of Providence is an out gay man who has been elected twice and will probably run for Gov in the next election and he has a good chance at winning.

Providence is really nice as far as cities go. And it's only 45 minutes from Boston if you want to get to the big city.

8. We've already decided we'll get married in every state of the union if we have to
So if we have to get married again in MA then move to RI we'll do it. Or if we have to get married again in CT we'll do it. One way or another we'll do it. The RRRW Taliban will. not. win.

I bet they are.

Lambda Legal, along with NCLR and the ACLU, has filed a lawsuit directly in the California Supreme Court on behalf of Equality California and six same-sex couples challenging Proposition 8.
