Shareholders Reject Bid To Strip Gay Protections At Wells Fargo
A motion by a Wells Fargo shareholder to remove protections for LGBT workers from the company's non-discrimination policy was defeated this week at its annual meeting.

Wells Fargo & Co. is the fifth largest U.S. bank by assets.

The motion called for the company to "to formulate an equal employment policy ...that does not make reference to any matters related to sexual interests, activities or orientation."

It said that homosexuality has been "condemned by the major traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam for a thousand years or more".

The motion was crafted by Pro Vita Advisors, a group that helps promote conservative values.

The motion said that "While the legal institution of marriage between a man and a woman should be protected, the sexual interests of, inclinations and activities of all employees should be a private matter, not a corporate concern."

The proposal was easily defeated.

Nearly 90 percent of the Fortune 500 companies have non-discrimination policies.

Conservative groups have attacked Wells Fargo for the past three years over its "pro-gay policies".

In 2005 Focus on the Family withdrew its funds from Wells Fargo.

"Focus on the Family has elected to end its banking relationship with Wells Fargo, motivated primarily by the bank's ongoing efforts to advance the radical homosexual agenda. These efforts are in direct opposition to the underlying principles and purpose of Focus, and thus a decision of conscience had to be made, and a stand taken," said a statement from FOF at the time.

Focus said Wells Fargo had donated more than $14 million to pro-gay organizations in the last two decades.

Similar shareholder challenges to non-discrimination policies that include gays have been fought and lost at Ford Motor Company.

9. I deeply regret that the actions of these hate groups would lead you to believe that they represent
the majority of us. These wackos are traitors who despise the Constitution and would like to replace it with their twisted version of biblical law. I also regret that the rest of us are not doing enough to end their reign of terror; sometimes the best that we can do is to work very hard to elect people who DO respect the Constitution and will uphold it. And some days I feel like curling up in fetal position and sucking my thumb, because it feels like the bad guys are winning.

But we can never give up; this is a civil rights issue, and the Constitution very clearly states:

Amendment XIV

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

2. My uncle was a manager for Wells Fargo for many years
He and his partner lived in SF until his partner died and then my uncle retired and moved to San Diego until his death. My mother never did accepted that fact his lifestyle.

Seriously. You're not punishing people that aren't like us! What's the next step? Stripping all benefits from any employee that chooses to follow a religion that is not in the Judeo-Christian tradition?

11. Good news.
In this city, San Francisco, Wells Fargo is known for having a progressive and gay-friendly workforce and corporate climate. They have contributed to numerous LGBT organizations, and have sponsored numerous events at the LGBT Center on Market Street. I am so pleased that they are going to keep this up and not be pressured into having this compromised.

Good on them for giving those dirty fuckers the brush-off. Creating a workplace where everyone feels comfortable enough to get the job done is just good business sense. Not to mention good karma.

14. Excellent! If I wasn't already with JP Morgan Chase
I'd probably go out of my way to refinance with them.

JP Morgan Chase bank is on the hit list for the self styled "Americans for Truth" (anti gay rights lobby) people because of their strong support for gay rights. Chase has also been leader for Out and Equal.

So those who have their mortgages, or do their banking with Chase can also stand up and be proud of supporting our communith :)
