Al Gore Posts Video Backing Gay Marriage
Gore Posts Video Backing Gay Marriage

Politico.com
January 23, 2008
From Ben Smith

Not sure what prompted this, but Al Gore has quietly released a video with a forceful endorsement of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. It pushes the Democratic establishment that much closer to a position he now shares with Eliot Spitzer and some other leading Dems, and is prompting a bit of grumbling in gay political circles that this batch of candidates aren't quite there.

"Gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women -- to make contracts, to have hospital visiting rights, to join together in marriage, and I don't understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage," he says on the video, which appears on his Current TV network. "Shouldn't we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to ones partner regardless of sexual orientation?"

Gore's words come after the leading presidential candidates have tiptoed up to, but not crossed, the line of support for same-sex marriage. All three support equal substantive rights for gay and lesbians couples, and they've sought to woo gay voters in other ways: Elizabeth Edwards has voiced her support for same-sex marriage, for instance, and Barack Obama recently scolded the black church for homophobia, in a speech to an African-American congregation.

14. Sweet!
One who confers gay rights and one who confers with homophobes. Quite the ticket.

4. Another reason to love Al Gore!
How many does this make? Oh, why bother counting? He just made me happy again.

Thank you, Al Gore.

7. I love Gore... god... how I wish he was running.
It's horrible how the Clinton's treated him. Also, it looks like he took a stealthy jab at Bill:

"Shouldn't we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to ones partner regardless of sexual orientation?"

Ouch. :P

11. He wasn't this brave while serving in the Democratic Party!
More proof that reason begins outside the duopoly. Even former pro-war abortion foes like the Nobel Laureate (and former DLCer) can redeem themselves once they step outside our polluted political system.

15. It is very clear to me why so many--predominately religious fundamentalists of SEVERAL FAITHS--react

so horribly to any question of equal rights for GLBT persons: It calls into question their inherent belief system. Human sexual science has confirmed that sexual orientation is NOT A CHOICE, but an innate component of our psyches. The foundations of human sexuality run deep, probably even genetic. For the religious fanatic to have to admit that a gay or lesbian person is just as mentally healthy and emotionally developed as any other human being and FITS INTO THE NORM for natural, human sexuality, and is therefore wholly valid, is to have to question and then be forced to justify their own belief system. ALL RELIGIOUS FANATICS never want to logically examine their belief system. Never. Everything is always a tennant of faith. Logical thought does not enter into the equation.

16. Also it belies the concept of Natural Law, which was formed, as I understand it,
in the 11th Century, well before the Protestant Reformation. Meaning that natural law, and the idea that homosexuality is a perversion of natural law and what God's intent for people is, forms the basis for much of what Christians as a whole believe, and to be faced with incontrovertible scientific data (such as you cite) that contradicts those beliefs is psychologically unacceptable. So yes, fanatic is the right term.

17. Not to put too dull a point on it, but "if religion is wrong about that, what else...
is it wrong about?" Indeed.

19. I agree. . .but then again, MY God-given life was not created
to support their insecurities by being miserable to placate their fear-and-smear chosen "religious" beliefs. They exercised their right to believe these things, and they are free to live their lives in that manner. However, they are NOT free to demand that I adhere to their beliefs simply because they are incapable of maintaining enough faith in their own choices without persecuting others.

They only have to justify their own belief system to themselves. If they are incapable of doing that unless others become human sacrifices, then the debate should be over their religion, not my life.
