Russian Jews Drag Gays Into Ideological War

Russian Orthodox Jews, until recently the only form of Judaism in the country, are battling an ideological war with the growing Reform Movement and now they have found a new weapon - gays.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, the largest Jewish group in the country, is calling on Jews to shun the Reform Movement calling it soft on homosexuality.

Reform is the largest branch of Judaism in the US and for the past several years has been actively building up congregations in Russia to the anger of the Orthodox. For more than a year there has been little or no contact between the two.

But the feud between the two sides reached a fevered pitch this week when it was learned a Reform rabbi recently performed a blessing service for a same-sex couple.
