The Origin of Hate
It’s always difficult to hear about gay bashing. The recent events in the Caribbean island of St. Maarten, where two gay New Yorkers were brutally attacked while on vacation with friends, only highlight the need to understand what creates this mentality of hate.

One victim, Dick Jefferson, a 51-year-old top producer at the “CBS Evening News,” now has a titanium plate in his head. The second victim Ryan Smith, a 25-year-old television news researcher, also at CBS, suffered far more serious injuries. Yes, far more serious than a titanium skull plate.

The sluggish, apathetic, and, dare I say, criminal response of the St. Maarten police should serve as a wake up call to all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation, that when stereotypes are continually perpetuated, unresolved violence is the inevitable result. The situation on the ground in St. Maarten took on an even more ominous tone when Today, a newspaper there, days after the attacks editorialized as follows: “It is made much worse when silly homosexuals use their power in the New York media to trash a friendly island for a one-of-a-kind incident. The homosexual community should be ashamed.”

This story is the nightmare of every parent of a gay person. I can’t tell you how many times my mother, who assisted in legalizing Gary’s and my relationship by signing our Canadian marriage certificate, has asked me not to hold my husband’s hand in public because she fears for our safety.

2. Forty years on since African-Americans were given equality
The stench of bigotry still waifs through the air. It will be many generations, long past our lifetimes, when those who love not because they should but because they can will be looked on with happiness and joy by all.

I'm so sorry I can't make it any better. As a straight man I just wish I could.:hurts:

3. Utterly disgusting.
I've followed this story on and off since the headline first broke and the horror of it never really dims.

If it was an attack provoked by an argument or a misunderstanding, it would not be excusable, but it would be comprehensible.

If it was an attack provoked by economic need or perceived social injustice, it would not be excusable, but it would be comprehensible.

But it was an attack provoked by pure hatred of how two people choose to peacefully live their lives, how they choose to love. This is neither excusable nor comprehensible.

It is intolerable. We appear to be going backward as a society. Tolerance is a dirty word. Diversity is vilified. Difference is scorned.

4. Sometimes
I think the origins of homophobia go back to hatred of women.

Men with vaginas kinda bullcrap.

I remember reading how sodomy was once a way to humiliate,to rape a man like he was a a mere woman.Women have been seen as chattel fopr men to use and abuse throught history.

When a rape case hits the news there are plenty of braying rape apologists..excusing the rapist fucker ,because they do not want to identify with the fuckee. the woman.

The bigoted stereotype of a gay man..I think comes from the beliefs about social domination that insecure straights feel gives them privlege. This social sickness in some straight men isreinforced by a subordinated position of women and kids culturally, this sick idea that gays are betrayers of thier own male kind, as in "self hating" men turning other men into women,i.e. throwing away the alimighty rule of the dick scares these insecure bully men making them realize how hollow thier power is..therefore these ignorant macho assholes might very well believe gays are undermining the false social dominance they think comes from thier"dick privleges".Dick privleges exist because of the many people male and female who are RAISED and taught by church, parents, ect to believe the false social game of patriarchy as if it is TRUE,And men like the position of power because patriarchy has perks for patriarchs all the rest woman, child, animals, are the 'lords' fuckees. It's all about the sickening social game of power, hierarchy and who dominates who.

5. a bit more
http://www.spunk.org/texts/anarcfem/sp001097.txt

"This is my rifle," the troops chant,"This is my gun," they slap their crotches;"One is for killin, the other's for fun." Four hundred thousand Bengali women were systematically raped by Pakistani soldiers; how many women have our boys raped? After all women have been bounty in every war.

Misogyny and homophobia are basic components in military indocrination."When you want to create a solidarity (sic) group of male killers," goes the Marine philosophy, "you kill 'the woman' in them."

And gay men according to the homophobes, take it like women, this is why patriarchial men FEAR gay men.

6. A sad and scary story
Edited on Fri May-05-06 09:10 PM by dsc
Even after I told my parents I was gay I refused to tell them I had been bashed. They were both so afraid for me that I didn't think they could handle it. I think more than a few parents of gays have this as their greatest fear. I can't imagine having a steel plate in your head like that. Those poor men.
