Threat Against Gay Prom

It may be a long time until spring, but gay students at Tracy's West High are already planning their prom and bracing for a demonstration by America's most notorious homophobe.

This already has been a difficult year for the students. The California Department of Education announced plans in October to investigate allegations that the Tracy Unified School District failed to protect LGBT students from harassment and bullying at West High. (story)

The Gay-Straight Alliance at West High School went to the state after it said the district had done little to address concerns about harassment.

The 'gay friendly' prom was aimed at giving LGBT students an opportunity to bring same-sex dates and do all of the things students do at traditional proms.

What is wrong with these people? Someone said to me, the other day, that "older folks" may be justified in their homophobia. However, I believe that this is wrong. My mother is almost 90, and has never, as far as I have ever known, been homophobic. My father-in-law occasionally uses the "words" but his attitude is 180 degrees from what the words mean - they are a habit to him, rather than a true prejudice. Nonetheless, since he came to live with us, he's been making a conscious effort (tough to do with Alzheimers) to avoid the "bad words" (his phrase).

I wish these students the very best, and hope their classmates will fully support them. My husband read this article and sends his best wishes to them as well. :applause: Go, kids, go!!

If this isn't alreadycrossing the line, I don't know what is. That said, I wouldn't mind Phelps doing something very stupid. I just hope no one gets hurt (except for Phelps of course).

Phelps is not only fighting a losing battle, but he's helping his own opposition by tying the gay-haters with picketing dead soldiers' funerals. None of us could have tarnished him half as well as he's done it himself.

The annual broomball tournament is a huge deal.
