My issue - deliberately misleading advertising. This book was about what makes a family, NOT about same-sex marriage. I didn't see anything referenced in their presentation about marriage at all - just family. And they seemed to miss any part that would have showed animal families - they aren't married, either. And doesn't that book depict a grandparent/single parent household? What kind of "marriage" is that?

This is where I think we need to really watch how these networks present issues involving our community. This was sensationalizing. . .AND an old story. . .much like the Matt Shepard "new revelations" nonsense that rehashed old politicized viewpoints last fall on "20/20."

2. ABC News seems to be playing to the fundies these days.

Ever since the 2004 elections, the news media in general (and ABC especially) seem to be running stories designed to pander to the religious reich. It's reaching the point where I no longer make it a point to watch the national news coverage on the networks and pull my information off the internet.

Maybe we should all start "monitoring" network news for stories such as this and making our voices heard.

GLAAD used to send out alerts when stories like this hit the news. I just received one from GLAAD yesterday about The Today Show, so I know they still do it occasionally. Perhaps a first step is contacting GLAAD to see if they are aware of the story and/or going to be sending out an alert. Media Matters for America is another organization that monitors the right wing on the air.

3. Yeah, it was just that idiot who made an ass of himself and got arrested

How stupid is he to think the school would guarantee that he would always be notified before and mention of homosexuality occured. The man has problems. I just hope the school has a good security staff. He seems like the type to go off.

If this whackjob wants his child to grow up in a vaccuum and be protected from any mention of things he considers "wrong" he should have the child homeschooled. There is no way that any school system can keep tabs of every potential "trigger" that will set each parent off and notify them--we're talking thousands and thousands of parents here for Pete's sake!

5. If this father wants to teach his kid to be a bigot...

which, correct me if I'm wrong, this is the bottom line here...

Then he should park his kid in a parochial school. Or home school the kid. Whatever. But he should stop acting like an ass about this...about the school simply telling kids that there are all kinds of families. Because, goddammit....there ARE all kinds of families. Families are about love. Whatever the sexual orientation of the parents.

I applaud this school for trying to instill acceptance of all kinds of families...be they straight or gay.
