Protesters, military speak out at UCSC job fair

Anti-war protesters. Counter-protesters. Same-sex kissing.

It all happened Tuesday at UC Santa Cruz, over a job fair including military as well as corporate recruiters.

At issue was whether military recruiters should be allowed on campus. Many students say no, contending the military discriminates against gays. Campus officials say they can’t ban military recruiters because of a law called the Solomon Amendment or they risk loss of federal funds.

Despite the controversy, the job fair took place as planned, in part because of new security measures, including a change of venue.
