Clarifications on NY marriage law vis a vis other states.
If you are part of a couple in Florida thinking of going to Niagara Falls to get married, think twice. Unless you live in one of five other states that recognizes same-sex marriage, your marriage will not be recognized by your home state (however, it MIGHT count as a civil union in California and other states). No matter where you live, the Federal Government will NOT allow you check "married" on any official form. No matter how elated we are over last night's vote, DOMA HAS TO GO. And, as much as I hate the current Supreme Court, will still ultimately need a ruling from them to declare once and for all that married Americans in the GLBT community are entitled to the same 14th Amendment protections as everyone else.

1. If a Republican President packs the court with Scalia type
judges, it will never happen. This is why I keep saying it will have to happen sooner rather than later while there is still a chance. Separate but equal just plain ISN'T.

Someone, as the Lovings did, will have to marry in a state like NY, then go back to a state where they live and it's illegal, and challenge the law in that state. That is the only way it can be done.

2. Too bad there is no leadership on DOMA, just weasels at prayer
Too bad the great orator can not manage to spit out a few words of support. That defines him. Shows who he is to his calloused core.

3. New York was a great thing.
It adds impetus and numbers to the eventual DOMA repeal/overturn. Come next April 15th, there will be increased lawsuits citing the discrimination that still exists because of DOMA. And, I think the Republican party may be beginning to see that the battle here is lost. They are on the wrong side of history, and a new day is here. And I think that a lot of that sentiment will spread.
